Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Never been a fan of Feudal Japan as a setting for games, films etc so can't say I'm too fussed about this right now. May change with time, mind.

I completely lost my marbles at this surprise. Who could've expected this? Let's hope this is Sucker Punch's Horizon!

On the one hand: me neither. On the other... c'mon, look at this game!

Absolutely brilliant news and trailer. My dad loved the history of the monguls and wrote an unpublished book which covered bits of this so Im really interested to see how it plays. Well played sp.

I wasn't really sold on the samurai game at first, but I'm much more interested now that I know it's an open world recreation of feudal Japan, as opposed to some cinematic action game.

Agree! I hope they've let themselves be inspired by games like Red Dead Redemption and Horizon, that created scenic worlds with a lot to do in them.

@Kidfried Yes I was the same with the Wild West and it only took Red Dead to make me love anything Western :') So I'll be there, giving it a go, trying to love it haha

It would be a shame to see that they spent 3 and half years developing just a trailer, I want some gameplay plz.

@StArHaMa I think there's a chance we're getting gameplay at PSX. I mean, the game has been in development for quite a while. Late 2018 release? Let's hope so.

This looks like what would happen if way of the samurai took itself seriously (I need a 5th game by the way). I'm in.

@KratosMD This doesn't exactly answer your question, but PlayStation Japan uploaded the trailer with Japanese dialogue:

I think having the option to switch to Japanese dub would be really cool. Hopefully they can do it

@Quintumply Nice. Games like The Witcher offered different dubs as DLC; more devs should do that!

Really excited by this and agree with the idea of playing it in Japanese with English subs, feel it would benefit the atmosphere of the game greatly. Fingers crossed we see some gameplay at PSX and a 2018 release date!

I would prefer to hear the language I speak rather than subtitled. They are American Developers after all and see no reason why they should make the game in Japanese with subtitles - just because its set in Japan.

I really don't see spending my time reading subtitles as being 'immersive'. If anything its more detracting, taking you out of the game and less focused on the environment, the characters etc because you are 'reading'.

@BAMozzy You can get used to it, though. As someone from a non-English country I've been watching movies with subtitles all of my life. It does not distract from my immersion at all.

I have played parts of AC Unity in French too.

@Kidfried Its very different in movies - especially as you can rewind if you missed 'something' - whether its something in the background or some subtle interchange between characters, even some dialogue that you miss because you are focusing on something else.

In an action game, it probably doesn't matter in a cut-scene dialogue - its after all just like a movie but you can still miss something. In a 'combat' situation - like a 'face off' between you and a character with dialogue, you could miss the 'tell' they are about to strike because you are reading or miss what is being said because you are engaged in combat, blocking and attacking etc. Its not like you can rewind to see it. The written word often misses a lot of the subtleties that the spoken word offers, the intonation and stress on specific words can change the whole meaning of a sentence, That coupled with body language and facial expression all helps with the communication between people. A lot of that is lost. Obviously its not quite as bad as just a page of text as you do get a sense of context more with the background images but you still miss more by subtitles than you would do with hearing the dialogue in your native tongue and able to watch everything on screen.

@BAMozzy I have subtitles on always. Often, when an NPC is talking from afar for instance or the sound effects or music or too loud, I can't hear what is being said anyway. Being a non-native speaker myself the subtitles come even more in handy. And now, I've gotten so used to them that they don't detract from action or immersion in any way.

And even when you have subtitles and a foreign language, you still pick up on non-verbal speech. There's hardly anything lost there. There is way more that gets lost in translation, when you play a game like Metal Gear Solid, that was originally written in Japanese, than playing a Japanese voiced game with the original English subtitles.

Also, I like learning a bit of a language from games and movies.

Kidfried

@johncalmc The fact that it is open world is what sells me on it, actually. Like a Red Dead Redemption in Japan.

Octane

Open world is the only thing that worries me. Second Son was a bit repetitive near the end, and there wasn't a lot of interaction with the NPCs, I hope they change that.
