Topic: Final Fantasy 15 or Dragons Dogma

I'm choosing between these 2 for a great single player group rpg experience. Any recommendations one over the other? I like Final Fantasy games as well as any great rpg. I'm sure I'll get both eventually. The constant sale on ff15 makes me wonder if it has some major flaws. I know DD is last gen, but great story and game play always outdoes graphics for me. Which should I choose first? Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

I reviewed both of these games (Dragon's Dogma twice) so my opinion far outweighs that of anyone else who replies in this thread.

I'm just kidding, obvs, but I have played a hell of a lot of both. It all comes down to what you want from your action RPG.

Dragon's Dogma has the far superior combat system. It's some of the best RPG combat you'll find on the platform. If action really matters to you, DD might be the way to go.

But Dragon's Dogma is also quite dark and dare I say dreary. It veers into Dark Souls territory at times with its atmosphere, but it's just goofy/Japanese enough to retain some lighthearted charm.

Final Fantasy XV on the other hand certainly has its dark themes, but a lot of it's quite jolly. It's all about friendship and helping each other through tough times.

Both games have pretty vague, weird stories. Dragon's Dogma is intentionally vague — at least to some extent — whereas Final Fantasy XV just doesn't tell its story very well. But I'd say the main cast of FFXV — Noctis and the gang — make up for its lacking narrative for the most part. They're an endearing bunch.

Both are open world, but Dragon's Dogma is slightly more linear in terms of maps. It's really a lot of long roads that go places. That said, DD offers more freedom in that you can go wherever the heck you like whenever you like, even if the monsters are going to destroy you.

FFXV is far from your typical FF title but it's very unique and really good fun if you can get into it.

In terms of RPG mechanics and depth, DD offers a lot more. Multiple player classes, completely different movesets, skills, weapon types — the lot. FFXV has skill trees but they're not especially expansive or all that interesting.

Long story short, DD is the better role-playing game (in my opinion) and the better overall action title. But FFXV is very unique and interesting in its own right, and worth experiencing.

Hope that helps. Feel free to ask anything specific and I'll try to get back to you!

First let me apologize for posting a comment with just half of the story as I will reply even though I haven’t played FFXV (yet). Mr. Ramsey has the credibility and the experience and basically gave you the best complete answer you could hope for but I’ll chime in just to say I’m surprised how little community praise Dragons Dogma has received. It got a few votes in our game of the year poll, but not much. To me it seems to be one game that deserves more buzz so I will chime in with my praises. The addictive and fantastic battle system was mentioned above, and I found the pawn system - your virtual companion that you create yourself or borrow from the online community - to be great. It was fun just playing around with other people’s pawns and seeing what was out there. Arisen, the protagonist, is also made with the character creator. So if you like projecting yourself into an RPG, then you’ll dig DD. Make your character in your own image and then your pawn can be in the image of say ...Taylor Swift <cough, cough> ... or whatever you’d like.
To me DD has a pinch of Skyrim as well in its feeling, maybe because of the setting.
All in all, I recommend DD if you like action-y combat, character creation, mystical creatures and magic, and ... dragons.
Also, my high praise is based on the original game since I don’t usually do remasters as I prefer playing games I haven’t experienced yet, but I think back very fondly on DD and wish more people had played it. It’s probably in my top 25-30 games of the last 2 generations.
I plan to play FFXV someday. I’m sure I’ll love it too. Maybe someone else can speak more to it’s greatness.

Never played Final Fantasy but played a lot of dragons dogma one of my favourite RPG's alongside Skyrim. So pick Dragons Dogma.

@ShogunRok Thank you for the thorough reviews from both games. Based on what you said with the mechanics and depth of DD I will pick it up.
@Th3solution @dryrain Both your votes for DD makes it an easy decision. Thank you.
