Topic: FFXIV Tips for a noob ACN?

I just got past my first "Dungeon" (The one with the pirates), but some of the things my party asked/expected me to do were confusing... I just tried to stay out of everybody's way and tried to debuff and attack as much as I could... but then they kept complaining that I was pulling the rest of the team when I'd go off to kill some enemies on my own... I wasn't in danger or anything, I killed most of the enemies that were attacking me by myself... then they threatened to kick me out of the raid! So are there some unwritten rules of ACN's that I don't know about or what? I was just trying to help...

Basically the most important thing is teamwork. You need to play your role as it's intended otherwise things will go very badly later on. I highly expect the only reason you survived will be the skills of your healer, rather than anything you did.

You need to let your tank take the lead. They are the character designed to take a beating and hold the enemy focus, wait for them to pull enemies, then start attacking (in the order the tank has specified if they do so). If you begin pulling enemies inadvertently while attacking, lead them back to your tank so they can take the aggro back.

Going in guns blazing and pulling loads of enemies yourself just makes things much harder for the rest of your party, particularly the healer. Also generally it's better for you and the other DPS class to focus on one enemy at a time together.

Also some dungeons have dungeon specific mechanics. It's always a good idea on your first run of a dungeon to let the others know it's your first time, and ask if there's anything you need to watch out for / any particular boss tactics needed. Everyone was new at some point, and people would rather you ask than pretend you know what you're doing and put your foot in it haha.

I know it can be jarring because it's different to how you play outside of dungeons, but you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly. If you're still struggling, Google for tips for how to play your specific class well. Good luck!

Edit: also if you don't have one I recommend investing in a cheap Bluetooth keyboard. The motion sensor typing is ok, but a keyboard makes the world of difference for team communication. And you can still use the DS4 for the rest of the controls so it's great really. Think I only paid £20 and mine works great!

@Gameboy123: What role you playing? I started last week as tank with no previous MMORPG experiance (aside from several years of Ultima Online back in early 2000's, much different to these modern MMORPGs).

In hindsight tank is a difficult starting role because you're having to lead a team through unfamiliar dungeons, when it's likely the other guys have completed the same run tens or hundreds of times and know it inside out. Had I known that I might have gone for a DPS role but now I've started I'm determined to make it work.

I'm level 26 and on the 5th dungeon now, done a couple of runs on each. I had a bit of a problem with an inpatient team in the second dungeon on my first run through. Aside from that everyone has been really helpful and patient. I always start the run by letting people know it's my first time through and have been getting good feedback. (As advised, get a bluetooth/usb keyboard!!). Then I just try and maintain hate on mobs using flash and cycling through my targets with attacks using R2+L1. I try and pull back any stray ones using provoke (not sure you'll have that yet). It's still confusing for me sometimes as to whether I should take drastic steps to pull back an enemy targeting the healer or let the DPS guys deal with that, either by killing them or bringing them back to me, but I'm still learning, plus the people I'm playing with might not be pros either.

I'd recommend reading a quick guide of the dungeon before running through, and also the link below to get an idea of what's expected of you depending on your class. And introduce yourself at the start of each run, if they have a problem helping out a newbie they are arses anyway and will likely not even start the run with you. The majority of people I've met are very helpful though, but they can't read minds so if they see you not doing your job properly they might just think you're trolling them.

Read this. Very useful:

Also maybe we can play together some time, I'm on the Shiva server

@kyleforrester87: pretty sure his class is Arcanist (ACN) which is why I was giving DPS advice. That's a good guide you've found there though, might use that myself if I decide to go back and experiment with a new class!

One last thing I'd mention is that in story dungeons with long cutscenes chances are most people will skip them and you can be left behind. My advice in that situation is to make some good friends via an FC who will run it with you and wait for you, or just do it via DF, skip the scenes and then watch them in the inn afterwards. Otherwise you might miss the actual fight, which is the most fun part!

Ah yes, well DPS seems to be the easier role to get along with. That guide really helped me understand what each class should be doing though.

The cutscene thing is true but again I think people are understanding of it if you explain to them it's your first run. They don't have much choice but to wait if you are tank or healer, though! Pro tip: make sure you've got chat set to 'party' lol

Thanks for the link! I pretty much understand now what I'm supposed/expected to do in raids as an ACN. :3

ApostateMage

Hi. I've been playing this for over a year now and I'm just curious to see how y'all are getting on and if you are still enjoying it?

It's a very very good MMO.

@ApostateMage, sorry I missed your post!!!!!! I'm doing pretty well, though just trying to catch up to the Heavensward segment AND realizing that you can switch jobs at any time (somehow I missed that tutorial, lol), it's very clear to me that this is a LONG game.
In other words.... it's fantastic! I love lengthy games that don't feel long, if you know what I mean

I've not played FFXIV since a couple months after reviewing Heavensward, but both SMN and SCH (based off ACN class) were love/hate jobs for me. Considering the number of jobs, it really is best to try them all out to see which fits your style best!

Of the 3 roles, here's my opinion:
Tank: By far the easiest. Very low skill requirement for almost all content in the game. It will take some communication and you will need to pay attention, but as long as you're doing content for your skill level, it's easy and rewarding.

Healer: Either the second easiest or the hardest.. depending on how you play. If all you are doing is healing and buffing, it's fairly easy once you're used to the controls. The problem is that you'll have a lot of downtime as a healer. That time (imo) should be spent dealing extra damage. Weaving between clerics stance to dish out some bonus damage makes a world of difference in some content. It's stressful, it's challenging, but it's a ton of fun!

Damage dealers: The dps role in FFXIV is one of the most critical to get right. A lot of content will require a certain amount of DPS. Drop below that and the whole raid/dungeon will fall apart. If you're playing a dps role, it's CRITICAL that you understand your rotations and work your hardest when needed. Different jobs will have different skill levels, but all dps roles will require practice to be both powerful and efficient.

To save our Mother Earth from any alien attack

Glad that your enjoying it. FFXIV:ARR is definitely in my top 10 when it comes to PS3 games.

If you don't have a lot of time, I'd suggest playing as Tanks as the wait times in matchmaking can get pretty long if you play the other classes.

I only played as DPSs (Dragoon, Bard and Black Mage) back then and remembered having to wait between 20-45 mins to get into a session at times.
