Topic: DualShock 4 not connecting

I took my console over to a friends to update files as he has a quicker connection. When I got home none of the controllers will connect. It says to use usb and press the PS button... doesn’t work. I have tried using safe mode but once again the same issue.

I have unplugged, waited, reset the controllers and none of it works. I can’t get to any of the main menus to do anything it’s just a screen that says to connect using USB and to press the ps button or reregister the controller...

Any ideas?!

I can think of two things to do:

  • Either the problem is with the PS4 itself. If you have another controller, you could try rebuilding the database. If you don't have another controller, you could: 1) unplug your PS4 from its power source, wait a few minutes and try again. 2) try booting in Safe Mode, by holding the power button for about seconds until a second beep (that's also what you need to do to rebuild the database).
  • Or the problem might be with the controller. I have read, but can't confirm, that holding the PS button and Share button at the same time is also a way for pairing. So perhaps you could try that.

I'm no expert on this issue, though.

Also, can you confirm your controller still works? Does its light still blink when you hold the controller or charge it?

Even when going into safe mode you have it’s says to plug in usb and press PS button.. it just doesn’t work... no safe mode menu at all just the message to connect and press ps button.... the controllers are fine... no issues... I have tried 4 different controllers... @Kidfried

@drsmith20 So, you tried rebuilding the database and the share+ps button thing?

And all of your controllers aren't working anymore?

Found out what the issue is (even though I don’t why this happens in the first place!) Most cables you can buy are not DATA cables, they are purely charge and play cables. In order for it to send a message from the controller to the console, you need a DATA cable... generally those supplies when you get with it... however, my console is over 4 years old and cables replaced.

Sounds simple, and it is... when you have the answer!!

@drsmith20 No worries about the typos, we all make them sometime!

And of course, I should have known about the cables, because I had that issue recently when I tried to connect my DualShock 4 to my laptop! Thanks for sharing the solution.
