I am considering getting both a PS4 and Xbox One for Christmas but I have seen on youtube where the analog sticks for the dualshock 4 were having issues with the grip/coating coming off. I have read various websites that say that this issue has been resolved. I wanted to check in with this community to see what the consensus is with the problem be alleviated.
Also when will a 1TB PS4 be made available? Is there any news regarding its release in North America. I do not wish to change the HDD myself nor do I want to use an external storage method. I would just rather buy a 1TB model. If one is not going to be released before Christmas I will probably buy a 1TB XBO and purchase my multiplats for it and use the 500 GB PS4 model to play PS4 exclusives on. The Gravity Rush announcement has got my attention.
Generally it took about a year before the grips burned off of my controllers, it took a lot less time for my friend since he plays COD and Driveclub the most. And I understand those require you to scrape at the grip.

I'll take the Vita to the grave with me, even if Sony won't.
From my understanding the coating was a problem for early release PS4 controllers. I do have a launch day PS4 controller that the left analog stick coating is coming off. I also have two PS4 controllers that I bought a few months ago that the coating feels alot better then the initial batch if that makes sense.
However if the coating does come off its easy enough to replace. Places sell replacement grip covers for the analog sticks for a couple of bucks.

I bought the KontrolFreek grips together with my PS4 console after reading about analog stick issues. It'll be great if recent DualShock controllers don't suffer the same issue as I plan on getting the Steel Black version if does get release here.
For almost nothing - was two bucks for me - on amazon you can buy 20 rubber grip-topper thingies which work amazing. I actually find they have better grip than without it, and they are obviously replaceable. Problem solved.
I do not know if the issue was sorted or not. But there are cheap gaming covers which you can buy. But I went for the Kontrol Freeks. They are more expensive but you get different sizes so you get more control in FPS I am still getting used to them but they are really well made and would reccomend them.
@TitanReCore: the XB1 controller ain't perfect either i have been through 2 so far, the first the left stick developed a tracking problem and the second the left trigger stopped working
where as my launch PS4 controller has never had a problem
although from what i understand the build quality of PS4 controllers has been improved and while i have never had a problem they should be fine now
also the newer XB1 controllers (with the headphone jack) are lot better too

I have an issue where the R1 button sticks down. I'm using a first release controller, but, I wondered if anybody else had the same issue? My left analogue stick rubber top is well and truly knackered and I didn't even know you could get replacements.
Buy from Amazon, they are great with refunds/replacements if you do have any issues. My launch day controllers both failed but the new ones are definitely better. Also just get some thumb grip replacements if you are that worried, they are incredibly cheap.
Regarding the 1TB model - be careful, I personally would want the C Chassis revision - its lighter, runs MUCH quieter, uses less power (revised PSU which has been known to fail in early models). Sony are getting rid of their old stock by sticking a 1TB drive in - so just be aware. I couldn't actually get a 1TB C Chassis here when my original PS4 died so I opted for the 500GB (had a 2TB drive to put in anyway so wasn't an issue for me).

The replacement sticks themselves are a few quid on ebay, you have to open the controller up to do it though, and it can be tricky (the trigger springs have a tendency to pop off). Perfectly doable though - or just get some thumb grips!
