If you do it right it can take about 10 minutes to replace and install the new OS from sony.

If you found a hard drive already keep scrolling. There are links to picture guides that will show you instructions on how to install a new hard drive and the firmware.

The PS4 only maxes out at 408MB so eventually everyone is going to need to upgrade their hard drives. Not every hard drive will fit.

Current PS4 Hard Drive Specs

2.5 Inches - (The standard laptop size internal hard drive will be 2.5 inches but desktops also can use this size)
9.5mm Size ( 9.5mm Laptop size internal hard drives)
500gb Size (Capacity to hold data)
5400 RPM (How fast the hard drive operates)
Sata II (How fast data can be transfered)

There are handful of hard drives that have good prices and will work with these PS4 Specs. Hard drives up to 1.5TB are available, Hybrid Drives up to 1TB and SSD Drives up to 1TB all will work for your PS4. The 2TB drive by seagate is not available yet but will be in 2014.

How to install the OS on your new hard drive What you will need

Computer + Internet
USB Flash Drive ( You MUST format your USB to Fat32or exFAT) Thank you AS for your contribution
PS4 with new hard drive installed

USB Flash Drive to download an 850MB file, Any size larger than 1GB with no files on it will work. I do recommend that you use an empty USB flash drive though, either get a new one or remove all of the files on it. If you dont pick the right option when installing your hard drive you will get some bad errors.

Step 1

Format your USB drive by going to your computers drives list. Right click on the USB drive and click Format.

Step 2

When formatting ensure the File System reads FAT32 then click ok

Step 3

Formatting will ERASE all data on your USB drive, make sure your drive is cleared of all files or you will lose them.

Step 4

After formatting Create a PS4 folder within your USB Drive, inside the PS4 folder create an UPDATE folder where the firmware file will be downloaded.

Step 4 Part 2

Download the 850MB file to the Update Folder - Link is on the full guide

Step 5

Insert your USB flash drive into the PS4. Hold the power button for 7-10 seconds to reboot the system.

Step 6

Choose option number 7 "initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)"

Step 7

Click ok to continue

Step 8

Congratulations! You have installed your update on a new hard drive for your PS4

Do I have to format the new hard disk via pc first (FAT32, exFAT...) or can I directly put it in the PS4 as soon as I take it out of the box?
The HD is a Seagate ST1500LM006.

No you can just put it in and format it using the PS4 OS during Step 6 of this guide.

Aye, you don't actually need a computer either, I downloaded the OS to an SD card in my phone and shoved it into one of those flash drive adapter thingys. Just need to make sure it's the correct full OS download and that the file is named correctly or your PS4 won't recognise it.

Thats the mistake I originally made not dwn loading the full system software then swearing at the PS4 because it was not working properly. I like how easy it is to upgrade the HD

I backed up to an old SATA II external drive on the end of a usb cable. installed as 2TB SSD drive into my box. http://amzn.to/2cejURQ (this one comes in a caddy which is easily removable. I just took out the drive and slipped it into my PS4)
Then restored the OS I'd downloaded from Sony. Restored from my back-up and bingo.
That was a few months ago and it's been working perfectly with no hitches whatsoever

Hi all,
I've followed all the steps and the PS4 is running with the white light (assuming that is safe mode) My issue is that I have a Samsung TV and it now shows Mode not supported. Any ideas on how to fix this? I can't seem to change the resolution or anything like that on the TV
Thanks for any help

@mijobra74: HI there. Keep in mind this is not an official guide by Pushsquare so I am afraid that I don't know what to do. Hopefully someone will be able to help you.

@KratosMD: PS4 does not support external hard drives. You either have to replace the internal one or buy one a PS4 with a bigger HD. I know it sucks. I have been using my launch 500 gb PS4 and I only have like 6 games installed right now because of how much space they take.
