@Th3solution I think Harry Potter was rated by knack Attack earlier in the round (rated under H for Harry or B for Book) I'm not 100% sure but will check it when I get the database out.

So Way of the Samurai. I’ve played most of 3 once. Even at release, it was technically outdated with PS2esque graphics and makes it harder to play in this day and age. Also makes it harder to figure out hit frames and there’s a little quest that requires nothing but precision.
Now, the narrative has some important elements. One in particular hasn’t been matched. You can draw your sword and fight at anytime. No matter the cutscene, you can duel or just fight to kill everyone. There is absolutely no point in the game when you can’t draw your sword, not one cutscene even.
I haven’t played around with it a lot, but if you kill a character then the story adapts pretty well and the ending adapts to it.
From a technical element and other issues, I’d call it not important, but the way you can always draw your sword (you don’t have to wait for a convo to end, you can always interrupt), it’s an impressive feature that I’d bump it up to existing.
4 I haven’t played but I’d say it’s existing based on my research. It’s a step back in some ways with freedom as I understand but solved other issues. A lot think 3 is better.

Yo, team.

My time has somewhat escaped my control, so I'm gonna volunteer some thoughts on a chunk of yet-to-be-analysed games in one hit here and then have to cut and run 'til Monday, alas. Huge thanks to all who've done sterling work on research / thoughts thusfar!

For the record, I fully support whatever the majority / final rankings end up being. Having played nothing on the list, there are no double votes to consider from me.

Turok was a reboot of the venerable old dinosaur-killing shooter that many were kind to. It had a lot going for it, with an engaging story, solid online multiplayer and effective use of the then-new Unreal Engine 3. On PS3, there were a few bugs and glitches which caused one or two points to be shaved off in comparison to other consoles, but largely the game was a success, despite apparently "missing that spark" which had been present in previous entries. Feels very Existing to me, but happy for that to be tweaked up (or down) by anybody with first-hand experience.

I'll do Virtua Tennis 2009 because of the hangover from last week's Tiger Woods games, I guess. Once again, this incremental sports instalment received criticism for feeling slightly unnecessary, with only the most minor tweaks to the gameplay from Virtua Tennis 3 (its predecessor, which came out three years beforehand, begging the question of what the developers were actually doing with all that time). Professional critics gave it average scores; fans gave it well below-average, citing barely any changes and technical glitches during online play as reasons for feeling like they'd wasted their money. Seems golf is a much easier game to keep consistent. Given that I've just seen this word used in half-a-dozen reviews, I'd call this Pointless. New balls, please.

The Worms Collection gathered together three PSN digital releases onto a single Blu-Ray and stuck 'em on shop shelves; containing Worms (2007), Worms 2: Armageddon and Worms Ultimate Mayhem, it... well, it delivered classic Worms gameplay. Lots of it. There were a few new tweaks, menu options and PlayStation-specific bonus items thrown in, like a little Helghast helmet item, so this release did have some effort put into it. The individual games included reviewed very well at launch, particularly Worms 2: Armageddon, so I'm tempted to call this Important. Because hey, it's Worms!

Reviews for the PS3 version of X-Men Origins: Wolverine in particular are remarkably solid; I already know of this game's reputation as it's apparently one of the rare examples of a movie tie-in game being actually better than the movie itself (a shocking prospect, I know). It stuck to the film's plot (another shocking prospect; there was actually a plot?!) but used it to frame a more violent, comic-esque take on the Wolverine. This effective aesthetic alone was enough to boost scores up from the basement, and Hugh Jackman's voice work is supposedly excellent. Despite some inconsistent graphical qualities and its overall short length, fans love it, loudly and proudly. That's gotta be worth hanging an Existing on, even if it dangles precariously from the end of a single, bloodied adamantium claw.

Unfortunately, any goodwill generated by ol' Hugh was squandered by X-Men: Destiny, a game which turned many an X-Fan into an ex-fan (ba-dum-tssh). De-listed two years after launch during the downfall of developer Silicon Knights, it was already a victim of the Disney / Marvel acquisition, with an obvious lack of budget and polish showing in the final product. Supposedly the "next big superhero game", it set lofty ambitions that were ultimately left unfulfilled; critics and fans alike attacked the button-mashing gameplay, short and inconsequential story and general dull, unfulfilling gameplay. My favourite quote comes from Joystiq, check this out: "...at least [because of the short story] you can quickly move on to something more pleasurable, like burying a beloved family pet." Ouch. There's only one way to follow a zinger like that, and that's with a big, bold Pointless.

So, that leaves the following unrated (sorry I couldn't do more).

Twisted Metal Eat Sleep Play
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine Relic Entertainment
WET Artificial Mind and Movement
White Knight Chronicles Level-5 / SCE Japan Studio
White Knight Chronicles II Level-5 / SCE Japan Studio

Best of luck with 'em!

@RogerRoger @Jaz007 Great thoughts guys. The list is looking good to me. It’s heavy on the ‘important’ and ‘very important’ because I pre-selected all the good games out of the master list, so that makes sense. Last week we had the left-overs so we had zero ‘very important’s and a whole bunch of ‘pointless’s and ‘not important’s

The final 5 games that haven’t been discussed all have some interest to me in some way, but I will have a full schedule today. If I get a chance on break then I’ll mix in some research, but whoever wants to take a crack at any of these, feel free. First come, first served. 😃

Here’s a few more thoughts for your consideration:

WET -
This is a third person action shooter / swordplay game, known for its acrobatic combat and stylistic noir aesthetic. Has a Tarantino-esque feel to it, which sounds interesting, but in the end was pretty average according to reviewers. Many complained about dated and poor visuals, and just an overall lack of innovation. Metacritic of 70, most reviews did state the game was fun to play and had some redeeming qualities. Sounds like a middling Existing

White Knight Chronicles -
I was interested in this Sony exclusive JRPG back when it was new, but never picked it up, mostly because of the mediocre reviews. Metacritic 64, the general consensus was that the game was a decent jrpg, but there was poor integration of an online component - a “Georama” system where you can make your own online town where players can visit the virtual space as a sort of lobby and then team up for online specific quests. I would call this an innovation except for the fact that it’s basically a version of what had been done in Monster Hunter’s online. And the multiplayer was a bit janky in implementation and didn’t run as smooth as it should have, but it was an interesting addition. Outside of the online, the game was average to below average in its story, combat, art, and enjoyability. Existing

White Knight Chronicles II -
WKC did well enough commercially to justify this sequel. Unfortunately with a Metacritic of 60 the game fell short of living up to expectations. The development team had a great opportunity to improve on the shortcomings of the first game but instead “churned out a cookie-cutter sequel that is even more of a rehash than the average yearly sports title or shooter franchise” according to Game Informer. Some reviews seem to state that the online became such a focus in the second game that the single player story mode suffered greatly. Predictably, the game did not meet sales expectations as a result. Not Important

@Frigate No problem, my friend. I know you to be a prolific gamer and figured you had some experience with the series, so tagged you on that just to be sure I was in the right ballpark.

Team 404 - Attention! We have received the assignment to order these into an order of best to worst. It’s quite a task, but we can do it. I think the idea is to try to get through these quick. We probably won’t need to spend any time debating or discussing.

I have no strong feeling about how we should do this, but perhaps the best way to start is to ask if you gentlemen have any favorites or those you know should be at the bottom. This is similar to what we did initially with the main thread.
The list is around 120 or so I think. We have roughly a week. So.... by my calculations we need to get through 20 or so games per day, minimum.
Shall we start with each of you giving me your 10 favorite games from the list in order. And your 10 least favorite I order of bad to worst. We should make it through the list in a few days this way, I hope.
First come, first served. First person to post gets their games at the top and bottom, as outlined.

Does this sound okay? Any other ideas are certainly welcome, but if everyone can contribute every day or two then it’ll be simple.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

Jaz007

To start, put Mercs 2 at the very bottom and I’d say Resi 6 on top, but someone might not like that one.

Jaz007

Th3solution

@Jaz007 Sounds reasonable to me. See if you can come up with 9 more for the top and 9 more for the bottom and that will get us started.
