Topic: Oblivion Question

I started playing this for the first time recently and I have a quick question. Is there any point in actually walking from place to place? I left the sewers and walked to the first town to deliver the amulet rather than quick travelling because I thought it might be better, but all I did was trudge for 10 minutes through grass and kill some rats and crabs. Then I rode a horse to the next town to find the guy I needed to find, and it was faster but even duller because all I did was ride. Is there a good reason to not just quick travel everywhere?

I've not played much of Oblivion but I'm assuming that like Skyrim and every other openworld RPG it's better to walk place to place to pick up side quests/items and level up your character. Having said that its down to the individiaul how you want to play, especially with a game like Elder Scrolls. Do whatever makes you happiest. Some people totally avoid fast travel - they are probably the same people who speak Olde Worlde to people in MMORPGS I personally tend to mix it up depending on what I'm doing in game + how much time I have in real life.

If I find myself fast traveling everywhere all the time its usually because im not having fun anymore so I tend to stop playing then.

Fast travel away!
You wont be able to fast travel to places you haven't visited & therefore will have to walk/ride to them and that is when you will get side tracked as things appear on your radar and you wander off to have a 'quick look'. Exploration of the unknown map areas can give you some great moments.

@kyleforrester87 Yeah, that's why I decided to walk because I thought it would be good for those kinds of things, but there was literally nothing to do except kill a couple crabs and rats. I did see some abandoned ruins that I walked through, but that was it. Maybe it will be more beneficial later in the game, but there seemed to be no point in walking it.

@Nifty I'm pretty sure I could have fast traveled even though I just started and haven't been anywhere. The tutorial message told me I could and when I looked at my destination on the map it told me to hit X to just travel there, although I didn't try it so maybe it wouldn't have worked yet.

Also, is there a way to run that I am missing? Even on the horse it took forever and based on the way the scenery was moving by me seemed to be going very slow.

@Xyphon22 Fact is I came to Oblivion a little too late and due to the technical limitations I wasn't captivated by the world. I'd say try Skyrim instead, personally.

@Xyphon22 Been a looooong time since I played it but there is no run, I think it gets a bit quicker as your stats go up. As for the horses, there are different 'breeds' and some are faster than others.

OK, thanks guys. @kyleforrester87 I've been a Nintendo-only gamer since I had a Genesis, so I got my PS3 just to play some of the great games I've always wanted to, and Oblivion was at the top of the list. I definitely want to get Skyrim when it comes out on Switch, though. But since I also have the Mass Effect Trilogy, Bioshock, and Ni no Kuni (plus Xenoblade Chronicles X on Wii U), I honestly don't want to spend too much time on this one game, so I will probably just fast travel whenever possible from now on.
