Topic: Is Ni No Kuni still worth checking out (for someone who doesn't care for traditional JRPG's).

I recently got my hands on a used PS3 slim (I was mostly a 360 and Wii gamer last gen)......since I'm not excited for much of what's coming out in Jan for the PS4, I was thinking about purchasing Capcom VS SNK 2 and Ni No Kuni on PSN.

I find the art direction from Ni No Kuni 1 and 2 to be outstanding, but I'm a little hesitate considering I usually don't care for JRPG tropes. Question, is Ni No Kuni worth playing in early 2016?, and will the game appeal to someone who favors western RPG's and is usually turned off by some of the more cliche aspects of JRPG's?

Its a stunningly well presented title, and I believe is well worth a shot.

You should definitely give it a go, the game's really amazing. And if like you the game, the animes done by Studio Ghibli are really worth watching as well.

Play this game and you can die a happy gamer. Loved this game art direction was great. The only thing I would say is that you need to be prepared to do some grinding to level up your character or you might stuggle in some points of the the game but this not unusual for japanese game.

Hmm, so I didn't bite the bullet, but I've been playing YS: The Oath of Felghana on the Vita (although it's a PSP game)........I'm very much enjoying it! Easy to get into and the combat is satisfying......love the quasi-isometric graphics.

@sub12: Ni No Kuni has a warm story with lovable characters. The game-play is really good. It's the best JRPG on the PS3 to date. Totally worth it any time.

I'm honestly not a fan of any kind of RPG games, but there have been some that I have really gotten into (Grandia 2 and Final Fantasy X) This is one that I have also gotten into. It's a really good game and the graphics are very good.

As a longtime RPG fan of games from Japan, I have played Ni no Kuni and I found myself wanting. I did not think it was so very good. It's an extension of the DS game, IE; a portable game expanded to fit a larger console. The setting is golden, and the playable characters are likable, but I didn't care for it, as such. I found the battle system an unnecessary encumbrance. Fighting with the avatars cumbersome and tedious, especially in boss fights where fast timing was necessary. I know I'm in the minority but that doesn't change the fact that I found it not all that great. I hope when Ni no Kuni comes out for PS4 they will make it more approachable. As such, I cannot call it a masterpiece as my standards are much higher having grown up with original PS console RPGs that were much better.

It's definitely worth checking out. It has great music and art direction but as much as I love JRPG I wouldn't call it a masterpiece: the battle system is kind of clunky and the characters are too goody-goody for me. Still, it has a lot of heart and it is probably the closest to a good HD JRPG we've come so far.

Never belligerent but always uncompromising.

The game is definitely worth checking out. The positives about the game are the graphics, story, and battle mode. My problem with the game (and why I couldn't get drawn in to it as much as I would have liked ) was that there was waaaay too much wandering around in trying to make the next piece of the story happen - and not in a good way. It wasn't like roaming an open world - rather, you end up relegated to arduous tasks where you are just trying to find something to make the story go forward; otherwise you end up stuck. I hate it when games do this, and so I quickly put it down after that. If you don't mind backtracking, and mindless roaming, then the game definitely has a lot to offer.

I missed the game because I had a 360 and no PS3 so I'm waiting for the sequel and I hope they remaster the first episode.

Praise the Sun, and Mario too.

It has Welsh and Geordie accents and Mr Drippy is a good laugh. Quality game.

Never got around to playing Ni No Kuni due to YS, which was great! YS VIII should be heading to the PS4 in 2016, so if you like action-RPG's or Zelda-esque games, make sure you pick it up.

@SaiyanFury: Totally agree. I sometimes think that the reason people praise this so much is purely because of Studio Gibly...

@BlaBlaBla: I do count myself amongst the legion of fans that Studio Ghibli has accrued over the past 3 or so decades, but even with that, I can't overlook Ni no Kuni's very mediocre gameplay. I agree with you, I believe a lot of people give the game a pass simply because of Ghibli's association with it. Unfortunately, that doesn't change the fact that it's simply not a very good game. As I stated above, if Namco can iron out some of the kinks in the gameplay, I'd be happy to give a sequel a go, but as it stands, I was really let down by Ni no Kuni.

@BodyW-outOrgans: This largely sums up my issues with the game. Now let it be known, I have no problems backtracking and whatnot being a longtime player of RPGs, but as you described, there are large swathes of travel during which, absolutely nothing happens. Just boring travelling between locales trying to move the plot along. There's really not that much to keep the player interested. Coupled to a lacklustre battle system, especially during boss battles where you're screaming at your avatar to execute whatever command you had issued to it, while your HP are getting drained rapidly, it was just altogether more frustrating. I truly hope that the sequel is more well thought out and better executed, I would love to give it a go. Please Namco?
