Hi guys just wondering if any of you have experience with PS4 to vita remote play?

Is it worthwhile or is it laggy?

I'm considering getting a vita for remote play as I don't get a lot of time to play on the main tv anymore

I have sky fibre max broadband I've done a speed test on sky and it says I have 80mbps but I downloaded an app which told me Im getting around 40mbps download and 20mbps upload at peak times. Ping is around 10ms.

I'm not sure if this would give a reliable lag free remote play session from PS4, to vita.

I won't be far from the PS4 and it's connected via wired ethernet.

Also I'm not sure the best way to connect is it through wi fi or direct from PS4 to vita which would provide the best lag free experience.

Yet to get a vita and I know it's pretty much dead from won't support but from looking it still has some great games and the remote play really interests me.

Also any difference in remote play quality between vita and say one of the Sony smartphones?

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

@Jamieleewv With that set up in the house you'd have very few issues. The difference with the direct vs router connection will depend on where you are in the house. Chances are, the radio in the router is better than the on board PS4 one - but it's something to just check out.

The remote play to my Z2 Tablet is generally better than the Vita, but that's just due to the WiFi radio on the tablet being slightly better, you do get to pair a DualShock 4 though.

Also, a fair few of the Xperia phones don't support remote play (or native DS4 support) anymore, so check that out before diving in.

It is possible to sideload the remote play app to any android phone, but it's a bit of a hassle and last I checked, the available apk was out of date (as in, won't work).

This is a remote play test I did many years ago using my Z2 Tablet. The set up was in a very old thick walled house, the PS4 upstairs on WiFi all through a pretty crap Sky router. Still worked pretty well.

@Jamieleewv I had pretty decent luck with remote play but only had luck using with direct to PS4 connecting. It did well, lag seemed minimal. The worst part was actually adjusting to the controls. The rear touch pad is a poor R2, L2 substitute. But it does function after you get used to it. As far as functionality it connected well usually but it would drop connection randomly at times. I discovered that my Apple TV was interfering with the signal, and so you need to also consider any other WiFi radio utilizing machines in the house can mess with your connectability.
I don’t use remote play much anymore since I got my PS4 and TV set up better.

Thanks guys.

Might avoid the vita the.

Does the Xperia xz2 still support remote play? Can get it quite cheap now. And could I use my PlayStation controller with this phone too?

If so that seems the logical way to go?

Not sure if you guys heard of it but i did try this vortex cloud game streaming but it was so laggy it was unreal.

Guessing PlayStation remote play should be much better experience?

@Jamieleewv I think all of the 'XZ' phones support remote play, but best to check before you buy. I assume they do support the DS4 in the same way my tablet does - but again - best to check.

Would you be getting the phone just for remote play or to use as your main mobile too?

No I would be using it as my main phone too.

I just don't want to get it and then the actual remote play be laggy and not worth it if that makes sense.

Just checked and the xz2 is compatible so iy may be the way to go?

My experience has been laggy to be honest with both Vita and PStv. I connected my PS4 to my router via ethernet and then had a wifi booster in the house to my room which I also connected via ethernet to the PStv and I still had issues.

I know a lot of people recommend the plugged in wifi extender that goes via your electrics but my house has two circuits so wouldn't work. I do think the main thing is your environment, interference and everything. If you can try before you buy, that might be better.

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

I'd consider your usage before going for it. Screen-on time and processor heavy operations can drain a phone battery pretty quickly (and ultimately lead to far more charges than if you weren't doing remote play, decreasing the battery overall lifespan). Mobile chipsets can run very hot under stress too which will also affect the phone's longevity. If remote play is something you'll use a lot - how convenient will it be to have your phone useless as a phone while you're playing? Remote Play will disconnect when you move back to the android launcher home screen to check a text message, for example.

With a Vita, you can just pause and put it down and go back to it. It's certainly not perfect, some games are compromised by the lack of R2/L2, R3/L3 - but some work perfectly fine with minimal adjustment.

Also, a Vita would be cheaper.

Do you have a laptop? you could try that out first and see if it's a better solution.

I could sell my current phone and purchase a remote play compatible one if that makes sense.

And it's not like I would game for hours. I have a newborn baby so it's only really an hour or two a night rather than full day sessions (I do miss those days).

The only reason Im against getting the vita is the comment about the weaker built in wi fi which made me think a Sony phone would have a better less laggy experience than the vita?

I'm really not sure what what to do.

Do I just stick to mobile gaming 😂 cannot get the library of games though it's just not the same.

If you connect the vita/phone directly to the PS4 does that not make a difference? As heard people say internet speeds don't really matter when it comes to streaming inside the same room?

I am so confused 😂 I've seen lots of YouTube videos of people using remote play from PS4 to their Sony smartphones with literally 0 lag. Although not sure how legit these are.

@Jamieleewv

What phone do you have now?

Do you know anyone with a Vita who could let you try it out? The whole thing whether on a phone, tablet or Vita is pretty variable depending on the environment. In a house with a relatively new router should see the Vita perform just fine, possibly better than the direct PS4 connection.

Also, what sort of games are you playing? Recently, I've tried Ace Combat 7 and Spider-Man with the Vita remote play and both work pretty well. The NHL19 control options on the other hand make it difficult to play without switching to the NHL94 controls.

I have an honor 8x right now.

I don't know anyone who owns a vita unfortunately.

If I swapped my phone for a Sony one and remote play doesn't work properly at least I haven't wasted money innrepsect that I can still use it as my normal phone if that makes sense.

Although with a vita I imagine there's loads of good games to play on the console itself.

My router is brand new it's the latest one that comes with sky max fibre broadband I'm guessing switching to 5ghz WiFi would help too?

@Jamieleewv

For the phone definitely.

Vita doesn't do 5gHz, 2.4 is the limit. Though handy if everthing else is on 5.

The vita doesn't require an internet connection to play as it streams straight from the PS4 and not through the actual wi fi is this correct?

If so does the same apply to the Sony smartphones do they direct link with the PS4 or do they need to to through wi fi?

Jamieleewv

KALofKRYPTON

@Jamieleewv that's true, but with a good router, you're potentially better off connecting the Vita via the router rather than directly to the PS4.

Phones won't connect directly to the PS4.

@Jamieleewv For what it’s worth, I love my Vita for the native games it can play, and the remote play aspect is just an added bonus. Even if you find you don’t care for remote play or it doesn’t work well in your home then at least you have a fully functional handheld that has dozens and dozens of good games to play on it’s own. These you’ll be able to play anywhere you go, even if there is no WiFi and you won’t have to worry about connectivity. I’ve never used a Sony phone or tablet to stream PS4 games so can’t speak to that. It sounds like remote play might be a little better with those, but Vita likely will work for most scenarios pretty well. The Vita is about to become extinct as you probably know. Production has shut down for the units, so before long I anticipate they will be hard to find. That may be something to think about also.
