Topic: PS4 external HHD swap

I ordered a 2TB EXTERNAL HDD to replace my old full 750GB EXTERNAL HDD. So how do I move stuff? Google search said copy internal to new HDD, copy old external to internal, then copy that over to new external. Which I know can't be right b/c we would be rioting in the streets. Plus my internal is 500GB, my external is 750GB, so it wouldn't even fit. Must be a way to attach both to PS4 or PC and move right?

I just replaced my 64GB Micro SD card on Switch w/ a 128GB card and that was easy enough, popped the old card into PC, copy, pop new card into PC, paste, done. Yes it was that easy, no jailbreaking or hacks.

@rjejr I'm not positive but I think you can just plug both into the PS4 and move the data in the settings>storage

@rjejr Unfortunately PS4 only supports using one external drive at the same time for extended storage.

Only way I know is to move the games to internal harddisk, swap the external harddisk and move them to the new external harsdisk. Repeat until all games were moved. Or you can instead reinstall and redownload them to the new external harddisk.

You can also move some games and reinstall/redownload others. That's what I did to accomplish this.

I've never moved stuff to PC, so wouldn't want to advise on that.

@ralphdibny You would think that, wouldn't you? But it doesn't seem to be the case, see other reply.

@JohnnyShoulder So Sony is really way behind Nintendo on this huh? It's ridiculous. Like thinking about canceling my order and just deleting everything ridiculous. It's absurd.

Thank you both for taking the time to reply. I just resubscribed to PS+ so I'll back up all my saves then just hook up the new drive and fill it up from scratch, I'm probably never going to replay 80% of those games anyway.

@JohnnyShoulder I had no idea that was the case I thought it accepted 8tb of external drive space split between two externals, not that I've tried, just thought I read that somewhere, guess not!

@ralphdibny It will probably be a major bullet point for PS5 marketing - Now, hook up 2 external HDD at once!! 😉

@rjejr Yeah it made me think about what games to keep. Had to be brutally honest with what games I was really going to play again. I still had quite a bit of space on my internal hdd so it only took two separate transfers to get it done.

@rjejr lol but I expect the ssds to be crazy expensive. Sometimes a clearout is good, I just upgraded my internal and put all the games I own on to it, I'm probably Gona wipe my external and just download ps plus games to it one at a time as I play them. There's still a few games I actually own that probably won't fit onto the internal so they will end on the external as well

See ya!

@ralphdibny I keep all the games I'm playing or intend to on my internal ssd. I either delete the games I've finished with or move them to the external drive if I've not played them in ages but not finished with them. This won't take as long with the PS5's ssd and with the compression techniques you will be able to fit more games on there too. You can still use your current external drives with PS5 to play PS4 games, but you can only play PS5 games using the internal ssd.
