Topic: Message saying External Storage is Disconnected

So the past few days every time I go to turn my PS4 on for the first time for the day I am greeted with the message saying my external hard drive is disconnected which it is not. I always put my PS4 in rest mode when I am done playing it for the day. I don't disconntect the drive yet always have to repair it first thing in the morning. Any ideas why it's doing this? Is my hardrive about to die?

Hi, In the Power Save Settings, Set Features Available in Rest Mode, Supply Power to USB Ports, default is 3 hours try to set it to Always. This should supply power to the USB Ports when PS4 is in Rest mode.

Hope this will help.

@Tasuki I get this too. It may sound really simple but try moving the external hdd further away from the PS4. For some reason I always get that message if I've accidentally nudged it closer. Also I don't think it is a good idea to always put it into rest mode, you should always power off the console completely if it is not being used for a long time.

Just wondering if anyone found my solution helpful....

@LaJettatura I changed the setting and still got the error message unfortunately. I don't get it when I move the hdd further away from the ps4. Other people may have better luck though. Cheers for the advice, hopefully some will find it more useful than me.

@JohnnyShoulder That is very strange, just moving it away fixes the problem... Must be something with the electronics in the PS4 causing interference. It is weird because I have an Ext. HDD USB Powered only touching the side of my PS4 Pro. Then again maybe this is an issue with other models of the PS4.

Usually the problem is that the power voltage supplied to the External HDD in rest mode is insufficient to maintain proper voltage the Ext HDD needs. This is based on having an External HDD without a power source, meaning it runs off PS4 USB Port Power. So voltage drops on USB Port -> Ext. HDD powers down and corruption can occur.

Thanks for the Feedback

@LaJettatura It is very strange, still can't get my head round it tbh.

I will keep the settings as they are, so your advice may not be in vain to me. I've currently have my ps4 hdd as the default storage device so any games I download install to there, as I kept getting that disconnect when the external hdd was used. So I will change it so games install on the external hdd and see if the settings you advised to change make a difference.

@Tasuki it could be your settings, in power save settings/ rest mode settings/ set usb to "always". The default is usually 3 hours and then it shuts off and apparently this can cause issues with External HDD's

of course it could just be something as simple as the USB cable or port, i know this sounds dumb but have you tried changing the cable and using a different USB port?
