There’s a carnival-like atmosphere to Borderlands’ first DLC, The Zombie Island Of Dr. Ned, that’s both engaging and comical, despite the worn-out concept of “zombies” and the lack of progress options for Borderlands veterans.
Set in a new area (Jacob’s Cove), Borderlands: The Zombie Island Of Dr. Ned is delivered via a children’s bed-time tale. The events are set 10 years after those in the main Borderlands campaign, but you can access the content at any time once you’ve reached level 10. Poetic license and all that. The fiction tracks Dr. Ned (who’s totally not Dr. Zed from Fyrestone), and maintains a pretty goofy comical theme throughout. It often pokes fun at Borderlands’ main campaign, and is packed with little “in” references and quips at its overarching nature.
In that, it’s a delight to play, and actually pretty damn hilarious. The problem is, it all feels a bit empty if you’ve already hit level 50. Despite the zombies scaling to your difficulty, you never really get a sense of progress, because of the game’s level cap and a lack of interesting loot.
Having said that, the environments are most definitely fun, and there’s plenty on offer here. Raising the level cap by 5, and offering some more exciting loot could have made Zombie Island essential though.
But hey, if you like Borderlands… This is more of that.
