Megaton Of Kind: Netflix Is Heading To The Playstation 3

Netflix Is Sure As Hell Coming To The Playstation 3.

After a few weeks of rumours, Netflix have finally confirmed that their exclusivity deal with Microsoft is over — they’re bringing movie and TV streaming to the Playstation 3. More to the point, if you have a Netflix and PSN account, the service will be free to access. “Netflix expects to begin streaming via the PS3 system next month at no additional cost to Netflix members in the United States who have a PS3 system.”

You won’t need to use your computer either — you can manage your Netflix queue directly from the PS3.

Initially Netflix will work via a disc that you can order for free from here, but it looks like Sony plan to extend the application to the XMB as soon as possible; probably alongside the next firmware update.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Microsoft responds to this. A loss of exclusivity, and a cheaper alternative. Sony really are bringing it this year aren’t they?

I don't think MS are concerned about competition being cheaper. After all, I've read that Facebook and Twitter will only be available to Gold Live subscribers.

If they can effectively charge for otherwise free services, I don't see them being bothered by this.

True, very true. But there's also a certain mindset which thinks that because you pay for something, it's automatically better, and therefore must be worth it. So MS may continue to charge at least some kind of fee for that reason alone - no matter how untrue it is in reality.
  • There has to be a point when that's not the case though. Microsoft have gotten away with over charging for everything for years, and that's because of little to no contest from Sony in terms of pricing.

But there has to be a point where public perception changes from "XBOX Live is better and thus worth it", to "PSN does everything Live does for free".

I think that change will come with Cross Game Chat, which let's face it we know is going to happen sooner rather than later. When the PS3 gets that -- I think a lot of the gaming crowd will reconsider their Live subscription. At whcih point Microsoft will have to make changes.

In the end it's the consumer who wins. XBOX Live has been Microsoft's bread and butter with the 360. It'll be interesting to see what they do, be it add in a ton of new features, or go free.
