This Is How You Make The Playstation Motion Controller A Success – “Twiggy” The PushSquare Opinionator

Sony, Please Consider Packaging The Motion Controllers In Pairs With Analogue Sticks.

I’m concerned. Showing the Resident Evil 5: Directors Cut played with a single Playstation Motion Controller and a DualShock held with one hand literally frightens me. Not only is it terrible PR, it’s also a flawed the system and a downright bad idea. I lay no claim to being a tenth of the genius Playstation innovator Dr. Richard Marks is; but I think I have a better idea. I just hope Sony have the time to at least think about it.

I’ve never considered the Playstation Motion Controller as a peripheral going after the Wii’s success. Simply, it’s not. It’s going to be perhaps something to get new players interested for sure, and a new way to play for existing Playstation owners — I think Sony understand that. Or at least I thought they did. A bulk of the Sony E3 Motion Control presentation showed more “hardcore” gamer playing styles. It’s something Sony themselves echoed — seemingly interested in offering the potential of core experiences with motion controls.

The problem is, how can Sony deliver on those type of experiences without an analogue stick. Even the Wii provides a stick for individual character movement. It’s looking like the Playstation Motion Controller will be without that functionality, and as such is flawed. Particularly without a nunchuck solution.

You can break the problems of the Motion Controller even further. Sony have said that ideally they want people to play with two motion controllers — yet it seems they are going to sell them individually. I appreciate this keeps costs down – but it breaks parity. The Playstation Motion Controller is already a niche — it assumes users own a PS3 system, a Playstation Eye and a Wand; what development team could ever break that niche even further and design their game for those with two wands? It would be suicide, right?

So here’s my solution: sell the wands in pairs. Now I appreciate this bumps up costs. Really I do. But if Sony want to make this successful, they have to do it properly. Particularly when they’re against the already massively popular Wii and unproven (but hyped) Microsoft Natal. Sell them in pairs and you have an out of the box multiplayer solution for those games that only require one remote, plus you ensure that everyone who has invested in the Playstation Motion Controller is capable of playing those games that require two motion controllers.

But here’s the crux of my point, for the love of goodness put an analogue stick on every controller. By doing so the problem of holding a Dualshock with one hand while playing is gone. Effectively by having a Motion Controller in each hand, both with an analogue stick you’re replicating the DualShock’s control layout, but adding in untethered, precise Motion Controls aswell. You’re solving the Nunchuck problem, the control problem, and the parity problem in one simple stroke. And yes, it will make the Motion Controllers cost more, but again — if a job’s worth doing, perhaps do it properly?

I guess my biggest criticism from writing this article will be that the moment you add analogue sticks, you defeat the point of the Motion Controller. It becomes complicated and not at all user friendly. Well let’s take this argument full circle shall we — Sony know that this controller’s niche will be in making Motion Controls fun for existing gamers – an outlet who currently bitch at the Wii’s attempts with every opportunity – so, by all means give the casuals the games they seek. But make it enjoyable for stuff like Resident Evil 5: Director’s Cut too. Half holding a Dualshock is not the solution.

It’s all about choice.

Maybe instead of two motion controllers, there could be one motion, one six-axis. Think of the six-axis for direction-ability(very responsive just greatest precision) and the motion controller for your specific action (shoot, grab, etc.). I still think there's plenty of growth to be done in six-axis, even though no longer the flavor of the month. A better suggestion for the now, would be a bundle of High Velocity Bowling (now free with Qore), Motorstorm (either one), Lbp (should be no ?), & S.O.C.O.M. confrontation (if they ever fix/complete it). This would be a great value pack to exploit abilities too easily overlooked, when not experienced.
  • it would be nice to feature a "nunchuck" like the FragFX http://bit.ly/2IFJyv it has 3 buttons on the back, a digital pad and an analogue stick, but of course no wires on it. That would be a perfect bait for the hardcore gamers specially the shooter fans.
I can also see this being made by a third party if Sony doesn´t do it.
Play holding the DS3 for awhile is ok, but i can´t see my self playing RE5 all the time with that, there is no gripping.

In my opinion they should sell them in pairs and have one of them with an analogue stick.

i certainly wouldn't mind paying an extra $20 for a motion controller that has been designed for every facet of gaming. And some kind of analogue control (ie nunchuck) is essential i would imagine. Imagine playing EA's grand slam tennis with the Playstation motion controller, i would'nt want to be holding half a dualshock or forfeiting it all together and have the computer control the player's movements for me. I agree with you, do it right please sony, then a potential redesign or re-release wont be necessary
  • I think Sony should've gone with this http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/13/sonys-wiimot...

I don't care if gamers will complain that they have to buy a 3rd controller for their PS3s now (they did it in the past with the PS1 anyways), it would just be a better idea to have one controller that has both functions.

The only issue I could see with this design is where to put that large ball atop the motion controllers, but I'm sure Sonys design team could come up with something that gamers wouldn't notice (maybe using that transparent plastic used in the Sixaxis and placing stronger lights in there).

Well hopefully this idea gets picked up for the PlayStation 4 so that we're all not rushing around buying a console, 2 controllers and a headset for each player, and a camera (not to mention what else we'd have to buy... PSP2s, etc...).

Another thing Sony should do is to please let the Wands use Lithium Ion rechargable battereies that can be recharged by USB similar to the DS3! I hate how Nintendo's Wiimotes require batteries. I bough a recharge kit and rechargable batteries from a third party, but they suck! They take around 12 hours to charge fully! And the charge only lasts a little while! It's the main reason I never play teh Wii anymore. Because if I ever do I go and find out that the batteries are out and never bother...

I agree! It should be sold in pairs. That way they can make games that utilize boh as an expected standard. As well if they want they can still make games that only require one! And the second one can then be used for two player games! They can still sell them separately since people will need replacements. But the main bundle must include the EYE and TWO controllers!!! So we have the main bundle and EYEs and single controllers sold separately for replacements or people who would like to buy up to 4. Also the damn thing needs an analog stick or some kind of analog stick solution built in! Holding a dualshock with your other hand is awkward and NOT FUN! It's just stupid! Sony will really screw up if they don't fix this... otherwise the motion controllers in concept are brilliant!

Im in total agreement, i just dont see why sony wants to do the whole nun chuck thing. Simply adding an analog stick on the controller would work soo well. I was so looking forward to playing good hardcore games, but it seems like sonys trying to copy the wii now

The pairing of motion of motion controllers is a great idea. Sony should really consider it. Half-holding the Dualshock 3, however, if not that bad. I just tried it and it felt comfortable and I could see myself using the Dualshock's analog to move while using the motion wand to aim.

finally someone other than me gets its. i have been saying that it needs an analog stick since i first saw the thing in early 2009. hopefully sony or mark will fix this problem. put a analog stick on first and i wont care if they sell them in pairs or single. pairs would be nice though.
  • HeavenTear
    WTF!? are they stupid!?
how the f*ck do they think we gonna move without a analog stick or those arrows?!?!?? why dont they put and analog on this?????

I wouldn't be overly concerned by the RE5 example. I also thought it looked very awkward, but that's what comes from 'retrofitting' a game with motion controls when it clearly wasn't designed with them in mind. Games designed for the new controller will almost certainly not be so convoluted.

However, I do agree with your thoughts on adding an analogue stick or some kind of movement control. To me, it seems both obvious and vital, and I would certainly hope that this has been considered and planned for. Otherwise, the controller's use will be limited to 'static' games like the old EyeToy titles, or 'on rails' games.
  • It's gonna hit Aprilish. So yes, plenty of time, but they are touting the actual hardware as "near final".
  • Paranoimia
Having said that, are they showing the final version at TGS? I thought the thing was still in development. If so, there's plenty of time for additions.
  • Exactly. Absolutely exactly. If you also look at the LBP motion control video, currently that's only playable in co-op, which is fine and awesome, I'm cool with that, but with sticks there you could play it alone OR in co-op. More possibilities.

I think Sony have an opportunity of some cross-over with Wii titles with their current control setup. Maybe not the best thing in the world some would argue; but I mean it secures the possibility of franchises like Red Steel and No More Heroes appearing on the PS3 -- something that Microsoft would lose out on due to their controllerless approach.

Sony have billed this as a controller that will appeal to the casual type demographic and something to convince the hardcore. Giving the controller some analogue sticks just opens up even more possibility for them.
