Sony Must Be Feeling Bullish After An Excellent GamesCom – “Twiggy” The PushSquare Opinionator

The PS3 Slim Could Be The Best Thing To Happen To Sony This Generation.

The PS3 Slim Could Be The Best Thing To Happen To Sony This Generation.

Moods must be positive around camp Sony. After months of being kicked to the ground by sales figures, negative press and competition – they have to be feeling bullish after responding to their worst critics. GamesCom 09 was undoubtedly a monumental success for the company. A company which now seems to have left their complacent attitude behind and really got the bit between their teeth. Nice to have you back, competitive Sony.

Hype was high going into this week. Everyone knew Sony were on the verge of announcing something. Most of us had an idea what it was likely to be. Some of us didn’t. Either way, you can’t argue that the leaks and subdued chatter of the PS3 Slim managed to help Sony. Of course when the announcement of the Slim finally came on Tuesday, the Internet was bursting with positive Playstation press. In fact, Sony have pretty much dominated the headlines all week. For the first time in the Playstation 3’s life-span, Sony must feel the same kind of confidence they experience with their previous two platforms. That must be refreshing for the company.

We’ve always known the lineup for the PS3 was good. But it just keeps seeming to get stronger. People still cling to the belief that rival platforms offer a superior back-catalogue, and while that’s all subject to personal interpretation, we can’t help but feel that Sony are really starting to charge now. Just by simply looking what’s on the horizon for this year – Eye Pet, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and possibly Gran Turismo 5 – you get a strong perspective of where Sony are headed. The game announcements keep coming, and the competition are struggling to compete. After all, this is a year that has already seen Killzone 2 and inFamous launch.

With the PS3 Slim, those games are now accessible. I understand that they’ve always been accessible per se, but times are tight and people can’t always afford luxury products. The Playstation 3 is now affordable though. And that library is still growing. The most amazing thing to me is that Sony managed to make the PS3 smaller and cheaper without compromising any of the features. An argument that’s always been valued is the amount extra the PS3 gives you for your money. That “extra” just matched the price of the competition. Amazingly not only does the Playstation 3 give you Wi-Fi, the excellent free PSN service, Blu-Ray movie functionality, an extensive catalogue and the best media hub functionality available, it’s also in the same price range as other consoles now.

It really can’t be understated just what Sony have achieved at GamesCom this week. Even if I detach myself from the fact I’m writing on a Playstation website, I still really do wish Sony the best of success with the relaunch of the Playstation 3. Here’s a platform that’s been consistently kicked while down. Yet, here Sony are, with a new price-tag, a better system and a catalogue that’s showing no signs of slowing down.

I’m sure the execs are skipping around Sony HQ as I type.
