Valve Not Enamoured With The Playstation 3 In Any Way, Newell “Sorry”

We're Not Judging When We Say Gabe Newell Probably Doesn't Exercise Much.

We're Not Judging When We Say Gabe Newell Probably Doesn't Exercise Much.

As one of the world’s most renowned development houses we find it pretty shocking to hear Valve consistently talk about the Playstation 3 like it’s a challenge to their mighty development skills. Perhaps the system isn’t indeed worth their time, but there is money to made on Playstation 3 (we’d buy Left 4 Dead) and we find it surprising they don’t hire a team to, at the very least, give development on the PS3 a shot. After all, they’re one of the best third-party development houses in the world – there’s no doubt PS3 owners would buy their games and, well, the team must be more than capable of developing on another system, regardless of the weeks or so of man hour they could put into – again – at the least research the system.

Is owner Gabe Newell going to research the PS3 though? Is he fuck. As clarified in an interview with Geoff Keighley where Newell clarifies, “No [we're not working on the PS3]. Not in any way”.

Newell has consistently had beef with the Playstation 3 since its inception – inherently because of its “awkward” design structure. Interestingly, we’re still talking about one of the most renowned development houses in the world here.

Newell would like to apologise to PS3 owners however, regarding the inferior version of The Orange Box that launched on the system:

“If you look at the customers that I feel we’ve done the worst job at taking care of is the people who bought our product on the PS3 – Orange Box on PS3. Those are the people who I have trouble saying anything to other than ‘Yeah, I’m sorry. You have legitimate beef with us.’”

Still, can a development team who can’t even bother to look into another architecture really be considered one of the best in the world? Really?

We’re not sure Gabe Newell. We’re just not sure.

I think you missed my point mordokai. I never said ps3 wasn't capable of running rage at 60fps. That was the first article on google. The point was that it is raking extra time an effort to make it happen. This inevitably costs more money, an what's worst it costs more on the platform with the lowest user base meaning less of a profit. I'm just saying I hope rage sells well or they may not want to waste their time effort in future.

I'm no fanboy, I just picked the console that best serves my purpose. I had all 3 an sold the ps3 the day we bought a blue ray player an the wii is never really used leaving the xbox. I'd love to see left 4 dead on os3 cos it's a great game everyone should be able to try. Hopefully valve will change their minds when the ps3 has sold a little more :)

The main point is that the Half Life series is a "gamers game" and as such it's spiritual home is the PC/Xbox, not a glorified DVD player. The ps3 is much more suited casual laser disc type games, or games preloaded with cheats as Ps3 gamers can't handle games of skill.

Too bad every single HARDCORE game for consoles since the inception of the Playstation (the original) has been on...*drum roll please*...a PLAYSTATION SYSTEM. If you want a challenging game on a console, you play a Playstation console. And don't get me started on X-box storylines vs. Playstation storylines. Does Microsoft think people don't notice the mindless drivel the pull out as storylines? Where do you think the term X-bot derived from?

Oh my God. Dude are you for real? So are you a PC or XBOX fangirl? Im not buying Valves games because of the fat guy ^^^^ whinning.
  • This is the most hilarious comment I've read on the site all week.

Your just all lazy fuckers, cant dev for the ps3 because your team is shit, just look at other dev's, particularly first party ones like Guerilla, Naughty Dog and Polyphony Digital... they do amazing work and you can even do a port right.

You only go for 360 because its a basically a PC in a box, all you guys can do is PC development, so why dont you just stick to that then. I could understand PS3 dev problems at the start when it first came out but years on everyone is used to it apart from valve.

So go and eat some more burgers, you look a little skinny and I hope valve eventually goes under because all your games are shit, yes, I think Half Life is SHIT!

I think its more to do with money and resources than being lazy. Mordukai makes the point exaclty by insisting he wouldnt buy a game that valve brings to the ps3. Why would valve want to invest their time and money on a system, which as much as it may hurt you to admit, is coming last place in this generation?

Their current business model of PC then porting to similar arcitecture on the xbox 360 with little cost is working fine for them. Maybe if ps3 had a larger userbase then they would take the time.

Even "rage" a multiplatform game runs slowest on the ps3.

Apparent hardware differences between the the systems being to blame.
In such an incidence, to make rage run at 60fps like the xbox 360 version instead of the 20-30fps that the ps3 version runs at is going to take time and money. If the game doesnt sell well on ps3 do you think that company will bother wasting so much time, money and effort on bringing the ps3 up to par with pc and xbox 360.

It is true that games like killswitch 2 look amazing, but considering it was developed soley for ps3, giving a heck of a lot of financial backing and years in development, for a 3rd party to consider anything like that is something thats not going to happen when the install base on pc and xbox 360 with similar arcitecture is so much higher than that of the ps3.

think about it, its business sense.

You got me wrong here. I won't buy a Valve game anymore period, no matter what platform it came on. Gabe is just being Lazy because he does not want to learn a different way of coding.

As far as Rage is concerned, Carmack said that even though they are having a much harder time making the game on the ps3 at then end its going to run at the same standards as the other versions. Don't just pick and choose the articles that serves your purpose.
  • Yes it does make business sense, and I've never said I disagree with this sentiment.

Something in the way Gabe comes across on this matter irks myself, and obviously lots of other Playstation fans.

I think that's where the problem lies. We sure all probably let it rest however.

    Dude makes sense.

Sony fanboys just cant take it when a company doesnt want to make games for their sex toy. I mean console....

I don't see how "one of the world’s most renowned development houses" can look at games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, the Uncharted games, etc. and can't see the massive potential there. This guy keeps complaining, thinking he is the boss, but he seems to lack any sort of true developer's vision.
Pretty much every other game company has taken the time to do something with the PS3, and many of them have done amazing jobs with the new and advanced architecture and have sung its praises for the amount of power and versatility it has. Come on Valve, I like Left 4 Dead too, but this is just being lazy and lacking drive.
As a beginning game programmer, I can say with honesty that I only hope one day I'll know enough to be able to program for the PS3 or something like it, I don't understand why others in the field wouldn't want to try it!

Probably a relationship issue with Sony rather than any technical issue.

    'enough said...'
  • I think why the PS3 is hard to develop for is partially down to the Cell, because it has 7 spu's rather than the 4(?) cores in the XBOX and some PC's.
They seem to be slightly scared of taking a dip, "to test" as you said the PS3's architecture and produce a game.
Maybe they should start with a PSN game? something simple to start with.
  • crossed23
Thing is, other companies are starting to see the potential of the Cell. Several times lately comapanies are saying that now that they know how to make games on it, its way more proccessing power than they ever expected and its actually not that hard to make the games when you know how to do it right for the console.
  • As far as I'm concerned on this matter, I can appreciate that Valve as a company have found their success on the PC and wouldn't want to change that winning formula. My problem is with the way Gabe has constantly moaned about the PS3 architecture. We know the PS3 can do exactly what he wants, and if he doesn't want to use that, fine, but don't quit moaning on at Sony because you're too lazy to use it.

I appreciate he probably gets probed for quotes on the matter.

I don't know, at the same time I can see where he's coming from, but for a company renowned for being one of the best development houses in the world, it just strikes me as shoddy that they can't even, like I said in the article, at the VERY least research the system.

Im right there with you mordukai. I wouldnt buy it if it came to PS3 just because of this prick. Screw Valve.
  • mordukai
I am just about had it with this mans bullshit. HEY Gabe, how about next time you pick the phone up and instead of calling the nearest doughnut shop you can dial up Naughty Dog...LAZY FUCK. All he likes to do it increase his cholesterol level and bitch about every fucking thing in the gaming industry.
You know what sammy NO!...NO!...no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I would never buy another Valve game ever again. As far as I am concerned Valve would never make a PS3 game and I would be just fine with that.
