How Far Have The Playstation 3’s Graphics Progressed Since Its Launch: Resistance Fall Of Man vs. Killzone 2, Sonic The Hedgehog vs. Quest For Booty, Ridge Racer 7 vs. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, & More

How Far Have The Playstation 3's Graphics Progressed?

How Far Have The Playstation 3's Graphics Progressed?

The Playstation 3 has been on store shelves for almost 2 years here in Europe and subsequently longer in the US and Japan. Sony often bill their systems as having 10 year life cycles. We only need look at the difference between a Playstation 2 launch title and one of the later releases (God Of War II for example) to see how Playstation platforms are capable of standing the test of time. With 2 years of the Playstation 3’s life come and gone, how have things improved visually?

Our comparison finds out:

Resistance: Fall Of Man vs. Killzone 2:

Resistance Fall Of Man (on the left), Killzone 2 (on the right).

Resistance Fall Of Man (on the left), Killzone 2 (on the right).

When coming up with the idea for this article, the first comparison we had in mind was Resistance Fall Of Man and Killzone 2. Resistance was fairly well received when it launched with the Playstation and has gone on to spawn a sequel and a PSP release. When comparing with Killzone 2 the immediate biggest immediate difference are the effects. Killzone 2’s screen is littered with motion blur, extravagant lighting reflections and excellent particle effects. These effects make Resistance look bland even if it has well built character models.

Ridge Racer 7 vs. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue

Ridge Racer 5 (on the left), Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (on the right).

Ridge Racer 5 (on the left), Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (on the right).

Whilst still looking excellent on the whole, the comparison between Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and Ridge Racer 7 displays much greater draw distance and clarity on the former’s part. Gran Turismo 5 also has some of the most accurately recreated car models ever, at times verging on photorealism. The textures are also much more detailed in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

Virtua Fighter 5 vs. Soul Calibur IV

Soul Calibur IV (on the left), Virtua Fighter 5 (on the right).

Soul Calibur IV (on the left), Virtua Fighter 5 (on the right).

Mechanically Soul Calibur IV and Virtua Fighter 5 couldn’t be more different. Fighting fanatics would probably suggest Virtua Fighter 5 is the superior game but thankfully we’re just talking about graphics so we won’t go into schematics. The big graphical difference between Virtua Fighter and Soul Calibur are in the environments and clothing. The detail in the textures of the backdrops are far, far superior in Soul Calibur and the clothing far more emphasised.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance vs. God Of War III

God Of War III (on the left), Marvel Ultimate Alliance (on the right).

God Of War III (on the left), Marvel Ultimate Alliance (on the right).

A quick comparison between the character models of Marvel Ultimate Alliance and God of War III shows the speed at which character models are improving. The textures and environments in Marvel Ultimate Alliance are particularly bland too, particularly when compared with the lavish God Of War environments.

Sonic The Hedgehog vs. Ratchet & Clank Quest For Booty

Sonic The Hedgehog (on the left), Ratchet & Clank: QFB (on the right).

Sonic The Hedgehog (on the left), Ratchet & Clank: QFB (on the right).

It may be a tale of Sonic The Hedgehog’s poor performance as a game but we think its comparison against PSN download Quest For Booty is pretty conclusive. The Ratchet character model is far more detailed than Sonic with textures and draw distance being far, far superior in the PSN download.

Motorstorm vs. Motorstorm Pacific Rift

Motorstorm Pacific Rift (on the left), Motorstorm (on the right).

Motorstorm Pacific Rift (on the left), Motorstorm (on the right).

Graphically Pacific Rift is a slight upgrade on an already impressive looking game. The textures are still not as sharp as they could be, but the courses are far more dense and the models somewhat improved. The key difference between Motorstorm and it’s sequel are the loading times which were unbearable at times on the former.

Conclusion

It’s undeniable that developers are really starting to untap the potential of the Playstation 3 hardware. The original Uncharted, once a benchmark for what the PS3 can do, is about to get entirely upstaged by it’s sequel and Killzone 2. And in turn those games are poised to be stomped by God Of War III and Heavy Rain. Developers are really starting to get a grasp of what the console can do7

The future is an exciting place.

Xbox 360 is the worst piece of shit ,overheating, freezing, glitchy system i have ever owned.Stop talking about halo wars its a fucking rts, slow and boring crap.
  • Dan
Killzone 2 shouldn’t have to stand against Halo. Halos franchise has an original shooter and two good sequels and a host of ‘I sold out’ clothing and stuffed animals. Most of the fan base will purchase anything with a 'HALO' tag on it. SO ... the fact that Killzone 2 is challenging Halo-wars is a great achievement; even if KZ2 is currently behind. In the end it is my opinion a great shooter will out-sale a great RTS.

How about comparing a PS3 game to a PS2 game??
Dark Kingdom (ps3) VS. Champions of Norrath (ps2)

The graphics on Baulders Gate/Baulders Gate II/CoN/CoN:RTA go far beyond anything the PS3 has produced (in that genre of games).
  • Ha@theguyabove!

  • lolcheese
I find it funny how people say you can't compare the graphics of killzone 2 and halo 3. Can you not tell the graphical difference between a ps3 game and a ps2 game? Same principal.
  • erm.. fifa07 didn't even come out for the ps3!
  • Zotten
Isn't that supposed to be Ridge Racer 7 instead of 5 ? :-)
  • Fuck all PS3 Haters
    Shut the fuck up NOOBSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
  • francesco
btw MS1 looks all in all lil better then MS2 to me , I have both
  • francesco
KZ2 sense of movement and of acting on the screen has been reached using better the PS3 hardware
  • francesco
so all in all we can say there's no VERY SENSIBLE difference in SCREENSHOTS quality , that means that different hames just used different visual approach instead of being one better then the other , and this thing is RELEVANT if screenshots wise .

The fact is the movement .
KZ2 movement is all-in-all much better then Resistance ( or halo ) movement , more realistic , more human paced ( not super fast adrenalyne paced ) , and this is just the way to go in every fps my point of view , to mime human instead that to mime heroes that can run ultra fast shoot and reload ultra fast carry 23 weapons turn 180 degree in a millisecond blablablabla . Still KZ2 feels very much a game though ,
  • G
oh ya played halo wars. It really wasnt very good. Its graphics are mediocre and as an rts its very bland and simple. Not be a fanboy just saying its not that great. Its only sellingwell/scoring in the 8/9s because its halo. If it was an age of empires game of the same quality it would be getting raped by everyone and would be called a flop. Seriously...
  • G
oh man rc and GT look so good. I actually have ridge racer lol. sweet game. Btw I found the differences between the two motorstorms and fifas hard to spot. Coincidentally both in the sports genre...well ms is racing but still its pretty sporty if you ask me
  • saminseattle
@ BLZD, you say your PS3 is just used as a Blu-ray player, which clearly means you dont use it for games, deducing that you dont play PS3 games. So stop talking crap about a system and its games that you never play and know nothing about, and stop hyping Killzone2 and saying its supposed to be this " masterpiece, benchmark title for the PS3" and just cause Halo whores has more pre-orders doesnt make it a better game, pass the third grade then come back here ....numb nuts...
  • Lee
I'm not impressed with this comparison. Seemingly unrelated shots of separate games do not draw any valuable or quantifiable results. BS.
  • blzd
wow all these games suck including killzone 2. its getting its ass kicked in preorders by halo wars.. i dont know how well that sits with ps3 fanboys but damm thats the game that is suppose to turn things around for the ps3... i own all three consoles and by far the games that have impressed me the most is gears 1 and 2.... my ps3 is just abluray player for me the games that ive played on it are all rentals i own none....
  • ray
FOR THE IDIOT THAT WROTE THAT HALO LOOKS BETTER THEN KILLZONE GO SIT ON MASTER CHIEFS DICK.
  • Ryan
honestly, i dont know if it was the poor choice in screenshots or not, but there really ISN'T any noticeable difference in quality. Sure, the GAMES look different, but some games have different artistic styles than others. I'm sure there's SOME improvement, but not at all as big of a deal as everyone is making it out to be.
  • tishwash
FIFA 07 wasnt on the ps3. FIFA 08, Euro and 09 only.
  • francesco
    ?????????????????
    ???????? I don't see that much of a difference .. . .. .. . ..
    only me ? ? ? ? ?
I'm a ps3 owner and very happy , and what I yet knew in the beginning and know still now is that ps3 potential is NOT on the graphic stills ( pictures ...) . but it's on the movement
  • gatormatt80
@ get2sammyb : neither was motorstorm it was released in march 07 here in the US
  • David Macphail
LMAO...did some idiot on here actually say that Halo 2.5 has better graphics then Killzone 2??? Somebody get that guy some glasses.

Next he'll be trying to convince us that Gears 2's graphics were remotely acceptable for a videogame...................
  • @Terrorofdeath - the reason we didn't have Heavenly Sword in here is because it wasn't a launch title.

But yes, it makes for a stylistically better comparison.
  • Dan
Maybe my eye site is going bad at the old age of 28. Most of the comparisons look damn close to me.

How about comparing a PS3 game to a PS2 game??

  • terrorofdeath
Honestly, Marvel Ultimate Alliance vs. God Of War III was a bad comparison. you should have done, God Of War III vs. Heavenly Sword.

i think that would be a better comparison.

but it is good to see the evolution of the PS3 and hopefully it will last the "10 year cycle"
  • @ CELL989 - nothing wrong with that. We all were. And it's still a very playable game in our opinion. Although obviously trumped by "fresher" titles.
  • cell989
wow I used to be impressed by Resistance 1, what was I thinking.
  • MARNEY
    KZ2 has camels?...
  • Dave
this is retarded. If you knew anything about art direction in games, you'd know that you are comparing apples to camels.
  • @ Dave - sorry you feel that way Dave. However I disagree with the sentiment of your comment. For starters if you'd have read the article you'd be well aware this was all about technical comparisons and not art-direction. We're well aware art is actually the BIGGEST element of making a game look good but we want to tackle the issue of how developers are tackling the actual technical elements of the system.

Secondly - aside from the God Of War/Marvel game comparison I think we actually compared reasonable games. We tried to stay with the same theme or at least genre.
  • @ Wahmbulance: Now let's be honest with each other. It really doesn't does it?

Halo is a fantastic, fantastic game but - pure graphical prowess... it's no Killzone.
  • Wahmbulance
    Halo looks better than Killzone/
  • Jokeymoss
lol Marvel Ultimate Alliance looks like a DS game.
  • MaceyWild
Oh wow. I thought Resistance looked good back in the day but - damn.
