The Playstation 3 Isn't Selling Quite As Badly As You May Believe.

Sony make it a common practice to reveal their lifetime figures everytime they note their quarterly earnings. Note their figures are always measured by number of consoles sold to the consumer, not retailer. 23.8 million Playstation 3s sold does not represent quite the same levels of doom and gloom that the general public tries to construe. Nor do the 189.7 million pieces of software.

Could you imagine what a PS3 Slim with Gran Turismo 5 could do? Are we starting to see the lightbulbs switch on in terms of world wide acceptance for the Playstation 3? After all, it’s not chic to talk shit about the platform anymore. And that’s a start.

  • MS time came and went
I play 32 player games on the PSN everyday with no lag at all. if you are having trouble with 8 v 8 then something is wrong with your connection.
They give a hell of alot of support for there exclusives. I dont know about the multiplats but they do not concern me anyway. i bought 2 consoles to play the exclusives and maybe a few multiplats. I dont know about anyone else but multiplats just seem rushed to me and not given that special ingredient like exclusives do.

this will be a shift for sony no doubt and they have stepped up there game alot over the past year I must say.
  • MS time came and went
    @togoso

(ps3) "has few good exclusive titles." ahahahahahaha

I have both consoles and the xbox does not get any play time at all now. my last agme purchased was gears 2 and have not touched it since i completed it. I do not care for halo odst. I may get forza 3 but it depends what polyphony digital has up there sleves for gt5 so im on the side line on that one, splinter celll is a must for me and MAYBE alan wake. these are the only games on xbox worth getting this year and alan wake maybe out next year instead.
now compare that to ps3s MAG. U2, killzone 2, GT5 if released this year, infamous, mod nation, hell even the wipeout DLC was bigger than the original game itself. Of course this is just my opinion but most other will agree sony wipes the floor with MS when it comes to exclusives.

MS have the online part right no doubt and it cannot be matched, but the PSN is more than good enough since it is free! and always improving + I have no lag what so ever! I have not seen any xbox game have more players online than warhawk, KZ2, resistance and the upcoming MAG. Sony are doing a pretty damn good job since they are relatively new to the online game. But soon MS will not be able to justify the £40 subscription. Yes the xbox has cross game chat and other things but the PSN will soon have these too but since it is free I am not complaining. It is pathetic that the PSN never had these featurs in the first place but MS are software masters and Sony are hardware masters.

When it comes to prices and losses. MS failed on the build quality of their device wich they should be ashamed of! i am on my 3rd xbox now! and they had to pay ALOT for that. xbox is a bare bones system compared to the ps3. if you get the xbox to match the sull spec of the ps3 and then compare prices there realy is no difference but atleast u have the option with MS.
do not forget the gap is not realy widening but closing very slowly between the 2 console in terms of sales. xbox was the ONLY machine out for a full year + a further 6 months for europe and still the gap was not that big! but the gap stil remains the same. to me they are actuialy doin better than MS considering they came out late with a premium price, unproven tech at the time (blu ray), lack of games wich is not an issue anymore.

The upcoming ps3 slim + price cut and a slew of exclusive games will seriously boost the sales.

Guess it depends on the games you like. For me:
    Halo ODST
    Halo Reach
    Mass Effect 2
    Forza
    Alan Wake
    L4D2
    GTA IV expansions

    Compared to
    Drake's 2
    GT5 (when it comes out)

Oh and MAG 256 players online, using a systems that can barely handle standard 8 vs 8 matches.

But like I said before, let's hope that this slew of games, + price cut represent a shift for Sony, and that it works. It is a good machine that doesn't deserve the recent lack of support Sony are giving it.

"It always amazed me that the xbox 360 with its "vastly superior range of games" and its much cheaper console price can be "the best machine on the market" yet only sell 30mil consoles (explain that 360 owners)."

Microsoft weren't the market leaders for 2 generations. Sony were. Now they're dead last and falling further behind every week, while the deluded fanboys still expect to see this huge surge of sales where it eventually overtakes the Wii and goes on to sell 100 billion units. LOL.

Sony really dropped the ball. Instead of making a great games machine, they tried to give people a bit of everything and forgot about good gaming features, instead choosing to copy MS's ideas really slowly and badly. PSN is a joke compared to Live, the PS3 is STILL performing worse regularly when it comes to cross-platform games, there's forced installs, hardly any demos of downloadable games, no cross game chat etc. etc. etc. While MS continue to add new gaming related features to the 360, Sony fall further behind, choosing to concentrate on HOME (what a waste of time, as their own figures show that 75% of people that go into HOME never return) and low-res ad-supported music streaming with VidZone. How about a proper invites/join service? Voice messaging? Cross-game chat? Some demos? Games that don't eat up 5GB of hard drive space just by me actually wanting to play them? Hopefully they won't make the same mistakes with the next Playstation, assuming there is one, as Sony are 4 billion dollars in the whole and rising, all thanks to the PS3.
  • Exactly my point. If you want the revenue you should be releasing a quality product; or at the very least trying to.

The fact that developers think they can harvest cash off the Playstation fanbase with sub-par quality software is unacceptable.

    get2sammyb:
"...they should make sure those buying the Playstation-iteration is up to standard, otherwise don't bring it out at all"

What and lose the possible income from the PS3 Market? It is cheaper to port a 360 version than develop a PS3 version from the ground up. They don't care about the Sony brand. They care about the game. The way it should be.

    get2sammyb:
"...but they should be making sure fans on Sony's machine aren't getting a rough treatment."

Developers are only interested in making money. They are interested in their customers, irrespective of what system they are on. Do you really think infinity ward really give a damn when 60 million people buy the console version of MW2 whether they are PS3 or 360 owners? No. No they don't. They are interested in only three numbers 60,000,000 x £55 = £3,300,000,000. That's it.

Oh and don't get me wrong there is no difference between Fallout on PS3 or Oblivion, or even GTA in terms of the actual game. However, the fact you can actually get DLC for the 360, that to me as big difference. MS are willing to spend money (re-invest from XBox Live sales) supporting developers so that their clients (Live subscribers) have access to DLC. What is Sony doing about it? Wating six months to a year for the developers to release disc versions, which don't always include all DLC. i.e. Sony are doing nothing. So it's not a moot point. It's a bloody big point that a lot of gamers are going to consider when buying a console. Two consoles both have the same game:

Console A: Is cheaper; the console the game was designed for; has an excellent online setup; will have DLC; has tonnes of good exclusive titles, or

Console B: More expensive; the console the game was not designed for (i.e. ported); has a poor online setup; DLC is not necessarily available (although available for most, some big titles are missing); has few good exclusive titles.

This is such a shame because it is a good machine and can do so well:
Drake's, Killzone, etc. But Sony's lacklustre support of its fans, and lack of support of developers is killing the PS3. Like I said before. Stop developing shit stuff PSP, Home and start investing in games.
  • To pick up on the discussion of poor ports - I firmly believe that if a developer wants to reap the revenue from bringing a game to the Playstation; they should make sure those buying the Playstation-iteration is up to standard, otherwise don't bring it out at all.

I'm not saying developers aren't trying; however sometimes I feel like people are putting shoddy ports out on the PS3 because they know people will buy them. Fair enough, it's business, but they should be making sure fans on Sony's machine aren't getting a rough treatment.

However, I haven't played a game that was substantially inferior on the PS3 since Fallout 3 (and even that was fine). So this point is now moot. A vast majority of games run absolutely fine on the PS3 now -- unless you play your games zoomed in at 400% in slow motion.

"Thats the developers fault not Sony"

Not exactly true. I mean you build a machine, then make it insanely complex to build games on, do not push developers to produce exclusive titles, instead chose to sit back and watch every MP game be designed on 360 and then ported. I'm afraid Sony have a lot to do in this department.

Gaming has changed, MS is changing with it, Sony is stuck. Gone are the days when MGS and FF are all you needed. They've all gone Multi Platform.
Planning in the long run is a good idea, but you need to get there first and if Sony keeps dropping the ball like this, and in the current financial climate who knows what could happen. We may never get to the point where developers are willing to put the time/effort/cost into exploring and developing PS3 games to their full potential. Why should they? Why put all that money in and sell only to 28 Million people max, when they can settle for a cheaper multi platform approach (ie 360 port) and sell up to 60 Million (ps3+360) or 260 Billion if you include the Wii. Simple economics. Where MS is at least willing to cover some of the costs of developing games in exchange for content, what is Sony doing? Sweet FA. Sony needs to stop concentrating on crap like the PSP (DS rules, and will always rule that market), and concentrate on delivering services (games and a proper online experience), ditch HOME and bring out games for fucks sake. Invest in your fans. Give them exclusive games and DLC, trough developer support.

PSN is a joke. Live is excellent. Oh but you have to pay: well I would rather have to pay £40 a year and get exclusive content for games like GTA IV, Fallout 3, Oblivion and others as wel as a solid online gaming experience, rather than have a online network which is laggy an whose downloads are obviously of a late minute consideration. I had a PS3 with games like GTA, Fallout and Oblivion. I was very disappointed that Sony had not even bothered to secure deals for dlc. So now I am rebuilding my library on my newly purchased 360. My PS3 waiting on a shelf to be sold, no one seems interested in it.

I have been a Sony man (boy->man) for years. Now I feel very let down. The PS3 is maybe a better machine (Although recently that has been doubted:
http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2009/07/31/...). But the 360 is a far better GAMING experience.

Just wait until multi platform games will start shipping in multiple discs for the xbox 360 because one dual layer dvd just won't cut it anymore and then you'll have to either: A) Install the whole damn game, PC style. B) Have mandatory installs on the 360 because the game data is just too big. And what about all the early adopters or the people that don't have an HDD for their 360, If you think for one minutes that I will go out and buy a 120GB 2.5" HDD for 130 bucks then you are high off your mind.

I am really sick of the "Multi-Platform games preform Better on the 360". Thats the developers fault not Sony. If developers have such a hard time implementing their code then all they have to do is pic up the phone and call any of Sony's first party developers and stop being lazy and bitchy. Its true that as of now it cost more to developed games on the PS3 but it's like that for any new hardware that comes on the market and as I recall game developer sang the same song when the PS2 came out and they were whining and bitching that the PS2 is different and hard to develop for.

As far the PS4 goes then they already a PS4, of sorts, in the ps3. Sony invested in the roadmap, no need to retool for another 10 years. the xenon can not do that. Even though the Xenos and the Cell are from the same company the Xenon only has the 940 or 970 core but the architecture is not the same ...plus the FPU AkA altevec is not the same either ...the pipes are narrower and the buss speed is limited to serial transactions between FPU'S. The Xenos is still an SOC but not quite the cell.Microsoft will have to by other chip tech and re code and retool and lose money in dev. sony just has to lose it once. So the cell, designed for vector pimpness will be more useful in the future with vector mapping and 40 gb games that will fucking rock like no ones business....and it means less retooling for dev companies. Sony took it's time for a reason....because they learned from apple....they want a roadmap for a successful platform that requires less upscale and less cost for the developer. one time retool .

slow and steady wins the race. look at russian space programs, they just kept pushing slow and steady and their old shit still works. Where as ours keeps fucking blowing up or falling apart. We should learn from that, stick with a good design and exploit the fux out of it. Look a Porsche, same design from 1929 only now it's perfected, same as the kalachnikof.

i think anyone who feels the need to tell everyone a consoles 'shit', like the douche named meh111111 for example has a little bit of a problem. To think someone can be that willing to bend over for a particular company is worrying. As for the PS3, i've always believed it would take a while but would eventually catch up and surpass the others; when the price drops to something that might considered reasonable by the majority i think we'll start seeing rapid increases in sales.
  • meh111111
wtf. it's shit. u can talk shit about it -_-
  • It's also worth remembering that while the XBOX sits at 30 million, and it was expected the Playstation would catch up sooner, the PS3 is 18 months behind the XBOX in Europe. And that's 18 months where the 360 was the ONLY "next-gen" system around.

It always amazed me that the xbox 360 with its "vastly superior range of games" and its much cheaper console price can be "the best machine on the market" yet only sell 30mil consoles (explain that 360 owners).

While the ps3 selling 24mil can be considered a failure, just goes to show the xbox isn't what most people want, they want a ps3 but the price tends to get in the way.

Q4 09 and all of 2010 is where ps3 will begin to snowball.

People are probably unwilling to take the plunge on the 360 also cause MS might just up and drop the console when their next one comes out (xbox anyone?) while the ps2 is still selling plenty of consoles and games (new ones being developed still!).
  • crossed23
Great News. Hell I got 2 of them myself. I think the trophy system is a big help to the sales as well, GT5 will be a system seller for sure as well and that 8 yrs more of game releases is nice cushion for my 800 bucks Ive spent on systems.
  • Pretty stupid for people to start and rule the Playstation 3 off so soon. The console has already gained more sales than the Gamecube and original Xbox so its barely a failure.

Plus the console has got a 10 year plan so the sales will keep on coming, especially with the game linup on its way in 2010.

ALSO the console may be difficult to develop for but it does get the best results, that is why it myths me when developers/publishers claim they may drop it. I always thought developers wanted to create decent games but maybe I'm wrong.
  • mordukai
Thats good to hear. The PS3 is very well built piece of hardware and the exclusive games that are coming out for it are just freaking amazing. I firmly believe that in the end the PS3 will come out on top .Though third party developers bitch about how difficult it is for them to work with it, at the end they will learn and figure it out. Its like that with any new piece of hardware that has a different way of implanting the code. It keeps developers on their toes and prevents them from getting lazy i.e. Gabe Newell.
