Sony’s Wand Technology Sent Out A Fierce Message To Competitors Hours After They Comfortably Assumed Victory – “Twiggy” The PushSquare Opinionator

Archery On The Playstation Motion Controller Looked Breathtaking.

Archery On The Playstation Motion Controller Looked Breathtaking.

You’ve been waiting to hear what I thought about E3 2009 and here it is: everyone did great; except Ubisoft. Seriously though, I thoroughly enjoyed Microsoft, Nintendo and, of course, Sony’s press conferences. They all had a little something to offer to whet the appetite. The Beatles: Rock Band was a perfect opener for Microsoft, which actually blew away any scepticism I had for that game. I think Metroid: Other M looks absolutely phenomenal. And as for Sony, well, I think their motion controller was the best example of a motion controller I’ve seen — including Project Natal and Wii Motion Plus.

Watching Nintendo’s conference I couldn’t help but get excited over their demonstration of Archery with the Wii Motion Plus. I remember chatting to a friend regarding the demo at the time. “This looks amazing,” I exclaimed, “Give me Wii Sports Resort now… I need to play some archery!”

A couple of hours later I was sitting watching Sony’s engineers talk about the Playstation Motion Controller. Funnily enough they had an archery demo that totally blew away my excitement for Wii Sports Resort. “Forget the Wii archery game,” I exclaimed even louder, bordering on a shriek, “Give me the Sony Wand and archery now please!”

Initially I was a little embarrassed by the Sony Motion Controller. Two kooky engineers took to the stage to talk about their project, both of which were visibly nervous and the controller looked aesthetically far from finished. But perseverance was the key, as Sony showed how the controller could be used in conjunction with the Playstation Eye to swap polygonal objects into the players hand. Pretty impressive. Then there was the hand-writing demo, and I was coming around. The accuracy is unparalleled. When compared to Microsoft’s laggy Natal “Painting” demonstration this thing demoed in real time every bit as accurate as the engineers touted.

But then they moved onto, what I like to call, the Zelda demo. The final showing of Sony’s Motion Controller was the one that “won me over”. It showed a simple sword and shield set-up, where the player literally tickled the neck of an enemy with his sword, such was the accuracy. And finally, the archery I talked about earlier, where the player could pull arrows from the bag on the character’s back, all represented in real-time with real life accuracy. It was amazing.

But why have I gone into such detail recapping the motion controller? Because I have a sneaky feeling both Microsoft and Nintendo were sitting watching Sony expecting them to falter with their motion controller. Yet essentially, they blew them both out of the water. Natal clearly showed potential, but all looked very much like a space-age pipedream. The actual demos shown were laggy and no more of a stepforward than the Eye Toy. The Wii MotionPlus looked fine, but the technology supporting it continued to be limited. Which I guess is a criticism you could aim at Sony seeing as they only had tech-demos, but my point is this: no other controller managed to prove to me that their peripheral could be used and would be used in a real game concept to such precision and detail as Sony’s Motion Controller.

I know the Nintendo fans will be reading asking about Red Steel 2 and Wii Sports Resort – and my answer is: they looked fine. But what was demonstrated did not seem to offer the same pin-point precision as Sony’s controller. I’m sure Reggie would love to prove me wrong and show me that the Wii Motion Plus is just as accurate — but watching the clunky Red Steel 2 in action, I’m not convinced.

Regardless Sony’s sword & shield demo proved to me that in the right hands, their motion controller could come out on top this generation.

Ok... so this article is 100% biased for starts (he does clearly state that he is an "opinionator")... That said, he is not toooo far off track. However, I am not too sure that he realizes how much further ahead the Natal really is. The natal is sensitive enough to map your face from 10 feet... in 3D. That is quite a few steps forward. On top of that, adding a controller to the system would be a piece of cake as it is 3D mapped alls you would need is to show it to the natal and you would be able to use it. And to add buttons to said device would be rudimentary at best...

The fact that it is 3D mapped changes the game a lot; in the Eye Toy everything is based on perceived sizes, and a 1:1 map is actually impossible.. The only way you could get a 1:1 map is in 3D rendered environment. So it can be close but in 2D space it is 100% impossible to get true 1:1. But the Natal on the other hand does work with a 3D environment using 3 different cameras. So the precision would actually be greater.

In the end, Natal has 100% the most potential of all the new devices, as well as I can understand the usefulness of the Natal as furthering exactly why people buy the X360, it makes it a better media extender. I love the idea of having 1 box as my dvd player, split-screen system, and communication method.... that I can never lose the remote to... :D

Also(sidenote), I am not sure where you saw lag, but I was unaware of any as well as I not inclined to believe your words without proof, but it could just me mis-remembering.... I'll go look again.

Not quite: Sony didn't mention anything about creating games that demand the use of its "rollon deodorant". Even if that is somewhat predictable, it is still unmentioned.

The same goes for Microsoft, who'll probably create games specific for Natal.

The Wii case is a little bit different, since they are creating the same games, but its development made them require MotionPlus. Even though the accessory will be bundled, I don't like the idea of HAVING TO use something.
Of course, some people might say "If you don't want it, don't buy the game", but this kind of statement is vague, since people shouldn't choose their products - game and anything else - by some add-on, but for its quality and amusement.

Not that games like Red Steel 2 don't look good: I own all 3 systems plus portables and iPhone. I have to admit there are a lotta games out there that happens to get my eye on their line, but still, I would prefer much more if games like the aforementioned Red Steel 2 would offer MotionPlus support, but not require them to work.

    Anyways, that's just me...

"I don’t want Nintendo MAKING me use MotionPlus by making a game that only works with the acessory....thumbs up for Sony there"

    Isn't that a silly argument?

That statement can apply to all the systems buddy.
  • I enjoyed all three conferences, but I have to say: for me, the "motion-sensor thingy" tha would work out best would be definitely Sony's.

It is ugly as hell (looks like a rollon deodorant if you ask me), but as a gaming journalist, I can't help to see things globally.

I live in Brazil, were there's no official representation of both Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network (this one's promised for 2009, but it is a "promise" so...). Project Natal was by far the most innovative of all BUT there are things to consider:

    1) Since there's no XBLA in Brazil, in order to interact with Natal people would have to speak English, a trait very few brazilians share, unfortunately.

    2) It will demand internet connection, and the broadband here in Brazil goes up to only 12MB-link - a hecuva lot expensive, mind you. Most broadband internet users here own a 1MB...2MB connection link tops, so things woudn't run that smoothly compared to what we saw at E3.

    3) There are rumors (RUMORS, I said!) that Natal is bogus, BS, phony, and a major lie. Gametrailers editor, whose name I can't remember and I'm too damn lazy to go look for, stated that "very few journalists tested Natal and the few who did were 'instructed by Microsoft' to do exactly what the video suggested". Of course, he was more emphatical on "Milo" than the whole Natal cocept, but still, it is something to wonder.

As for MotionPlus, yeah, it is nice, but come on: I don't want Nintendo MAKING me use MotionPlus by making a game that only works with the acessory. It is supposed to be an add-on, isn't it? So people should choose whether they want to use or not.

So, yeah, definitely a thumbs up for Sony there. It wasn't the best, but it will work best for me by a long shot. I just hope they change those looks because man, that's butt-ugly.

Natal = EyeToy the 2009 model....

Not " original ", not " ground-breaking" and most assuredly not the future of gaming.

Sony have learned from the EyeToy and gone one better. MS will learn, like the EyeToy, natal will fail.

Milo freaked me out, but was all scripted. I mean it is after all Peter Molyneux.lol
  • Twiggy
Hey, glad you guys are enjoying this column. I just want to make it clear that I totally thought Natal was awesome too - I just got the feeling that post-Natal no-one thought Sony could offer anything that would come close.

    And they kinda did.
  • James
Natal was better. Sorry, but it's true.
  • Shendow
Wow some people don't understand how this works for a FPS, think it this way people "Wii REMOTE!!!!" and their you go ^-^ now you know how a FPS will work with Sony's. Good Day And Good Night.
  • duffman
i still give it to microsoft microsoft tech look a fair bit better but still impressive thats for sure

"I’m glad that you enjoyed all of the press conferences, but are you really sold on Sony’s version of a Wiimote? I mean seriously, most of that stuff will be done with Wii MotionPlus. You can’t just give up on Wii MotionPlus just because Sony copied Nintendo and only has a prototype. And btw, the Wiimote has buttons, too."

Okay...but seriously...how games on the Wii are actually FUN to play? No many...at least I can rely on Sony to make a game of have 3rd party support to make a game actually fun to use their version of the remote.
  • Save The Midgets!
Hey, at least one PS3-obsessed fanboy can compliment the opposing consoles, via their press-conferences.

I mean sure, we're dealing with a PlayStation fanboy here, his kind remarks were probably spoken straight out of his ass, but at least he pretended to get along! Way to pull away from the normal sony-fanboy-antics, and try a new approach to verbal warfare. It certainly worked.

This should be a lesson to all the would-be flamers out there, to every side of this console war and beyond, oh valient soldiers, witness this man's kind (but not really kind) act of generosity. No doubt he's a hardcore fan, bypassing even common sense to share his message to the world. Sony statistically may have not won E3 2009, but the fact that some people hate numbers is what's important, and also that 1% f them are only half-retarded Ninja Midgets.

God save the Midgets. God bless the console war!

Sony's patents show analog sticks for the controller, basically it looks like they are going to break the SIXAXIS/Dualshock3 into two parts and make those motion controllers. They aim for a release in the spring of 2010. It's feasible! The controllers are working now and just need a redesign. And given that the setup is very similar to the Wii, it's highly likely that third parties will be there at launch with ported Wii games! So we can expect to see the likes of 'No More Heroes', 'Resident Evil 4 Wiimake', 'Fragile' and others coming to the PS3!!! Perhaps even the graphics will be rendered/upscaled in HD! This won't be possible for Microsoft's Natal, though Microsoft could also make controllers for it, but they're going to have a hard time coming up with something that doesn't go against Sony and Nintendo's patents... Sony's method offers teh best of both worlds, the EYE can do many of the thigns Natal can, and their controllers are practically the same as the Wii's with 1:1 control in there from Day 1. Also there's nothing stopping Sony from boosting the capabilities of the EYE to come close to that of Natal's, calling it 'EYE HD' and bundlign the controllers together with it. I can see these retailing for around $75 with a motion sports-like/fps game in the package that demos a bunch of unique uses for the controllers. Sony's seems far more affordable and applicable to games. And I have more hopes in Sony creating more hardcore experiences with it than the Wii as developers know that Sony's demographic and install base is made up of hardcore gamers. Future games like Killzone 3 would definately make awesome use of it! Best of all it's highly likely that such games will offer you a choice to play it with a traditional gamepad or motion controls if possible!

is everybody forgetting that it is going to be like impossible to move during first person shooter mode

ok so turn left you do that
then turn left again and your not even facing the TV any more i actually dont understand how this is going to work
they only have buttons on the controller no anolog stick

also this is going to cast some serious dough
to have each controller atleast 50 bucks for each one or more so to even play the archery game your going to have to buy the game and two controllers so to even play the game your going to have atleast spend 150 dollars
i dont think its worth it
  • what's with the "Twiggy" thing? Does this make his opinion somehow invalid?

I have a wii and can't wait for M+ I would say that unless the pointer is pointing at the bar,it can't tell were you are in relation to the screen Sony system will,as it's tracked like a mo-cap ball on a actor.
  • YourMom
nice one sided showing in the article as well...
  • YourMom
Natal is much more advanced than you realize. It needs no light - it uses infrared to map the area. In fact - it created a full 3d skeleton of each user in real time. It can ALSO use any lighted device like the Sony wand to enhance the offering. It also uses a camera afterall. So, in the end - it';s the most advanced and robust. Anything else is just fanboy delusion...

    Sring 2010 was mentioned.

Being UK based not sure on launch timeframes, but a MLB Show 10 bundle would work, real batting, real pitches, out in spring.
GOW 3? probably not but that ball and chain demo made me think Kratos.
    Heavy Rain?

I liked the Sony tech demo a lot, but how long will it take to come to market? It's one thing to have the console map the image of a gun onto your hands, but it's another thing to be holding, aiming and shooting a gun-shaped controller that is actually in your hands. Wii already has a number of gun-shaped adapters available. I'm still worried about Sony and Microsoft's statements that they want PS3 and 360 to have 10-year lifespans. Gulp - stuck at this technology level for 10 years??
  • CrimsonFox13
I agree... Sony's seemed the most accurate and most practical. It has more uses than Natal.

And it has buttons. Need buttons.
  • Stalker
The second i saw that whole FPS mode with the gun shooting the eye toy of the top of the TV i was thinking thats F****** precise.
  • Nikola
If you want to write something then you need a pen,not a controler.
Wiimote allready have that kind of precision because of the infrared sensors.Simply start Photo Chanel and you will see it! Wiimote has been tested for 5 years! There is no way for sony to come even colse any time soon.
  • dang
Yeah I totally agree.Natal and motion plus can't top the playstation motion controller.
  • santa claus
    agreed
