There was a lot, lot, lot of great Playstation stuff shown shown-off either on the showfloor or within press conferences. Wrapping up our weeks coverage, here are our favourite things from E3 2009.
#5 – Mario Kart Gets A Reboot – Modnation Racers
Somewhat overlooked among the grandeur of other Playstation titles on demonstration during Sony’s press conference – Modnation Racers managed to totally blow us away with its combination of simplicity, humour and emphasis on fun. Mario Kart has been lagging for a while now, and this looks like it could be the spectacle needed to invigorate the genre.
#4 – Kratos Rips Off The Head Of Helios – God Of War III
We were told to expect God Of War III to be particularly violent. But nothing prepared us for what we saw. Enemies visibly wounded, Kratos showered in beading blood and the eyes being pulled out of Cyclops’. But really, nothing prepared us for the detail with which Kratos ripped his enemy Helios’ head off. Vile, repulsive and totally visceral.
#3 – Archery – Sony’s Playstation Motion Controller
After some initial scepticism over Sony’s Playstation Motion Controller, Sony righted any wrongs with the sword and shield demo. The accuracy with which the controller worked with absolutely no delay was simply breath-taking. And the fact that they were demonstrating live (much unlike Microsoft’s Natal) was creditable. But it was the archery that convinced us. Having to pull the arrow from your back? That’s accuracy beyond belief.
#2 – The Firework Display In Venice – Assassin’s Creed II
The moment Ubisoft walked onto Sony’s stage to play Assassin’s Creed II our heart skipped a beat. This being the first we were going to see of gameplay from the game. Instantly greeted by couples dancing the street beneath a firework scattered Italian night-sky we were convinced. Assassin’s Creed II’s biggest hook is its setting. And in the sequel, they’ve once again nailed it.
#1 – “Elena Fisher. Last Years Model.” – Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
There were a lot of things that made us screech at E3 this year. Some of those things are in this particular list. But nothing quite had the same effect as the return of our favourite character from Naughty Dog’s Uncharted franchise. In Uncharted, the developers have created a cast of characters that we’re really attached to. We’d been hoping (praying) for the return of a Elena Fisher.
And then BAM. There she is.
Honourable mentions: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Gran Turismo PSP, MAG, EyePet, The Beatles: Rock Band and many, many more.
… And a few disappointments: Not enough time for Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time and Heavy Rain; no footage for Rockstar’s Agent; PSP Go’s pricepoint; still no cut on the Playstation 3’s hardware costs; no time for a focus on PSN games.
