Why Did Guerilla’s Killzone 2 Force Me To Kill The More Interesting Good Guys? I Hate The ISA! – “Twiggy” The PushSquare Opinionator

The Real Heros Of Killzone 2.

The Real Heroes Of Killzone 2.

Somewhat  souring my experience with Killzone 2 was the admittedly weak narrative running throughout the entire single-player campaign. If you’ve played the game, like myself, you probably harbour an underground loathing for Rico that occasionally forces you bolt upright covered in a cold sweat during deep sleeps. The only redeeming factors Killzone 2 has as a story come from the “antagonists”, the Helghast, a mysterious race whom we’re assumed to hate but never quite told why. It’s no wonder; my research concludes that they’re the bloody good guys!

A friend of mine recently put me on the trail of the Killzone 2 backstory. Not only was I blown away that Sony’s biggest shooter actually had a deep history, I was actually dumbfounded as to why Guerilla opted not to use any of it. The plot is good and it’s a shame Guerilla didn’t put more into it. The glorious technical feats achieved in Killzone 2 could have been seriously underlined if they’d been given more context. Like the war itself; I just assumed the Helghast were rotten aliens trying to take over the world. I never once questioned the motives behind my foul-mouthed team. I guess that’s for the best given that the ISA are rotten, raging hypocrites.

According to Guerilla’s story, the Helghast aren’t bad guys at all. To put it all into simple terms, the Helghast are a corporation formed on Earth; an offshoot of the United Colonial Nations whose objective is to inhabit new planets due to the breakdown of Earth. When six UCN colony ships go missing, financial crisis takes place and the government are forced to auction off two newly discovered planets: Vekta and Helghan. The Helghast buy both of the planets and settle on Vekta. As time progresses, the Helghast find industry by using Vekta as a hub for passing ships – charging for the privilege. Jealous of the Helghans profits, the UCN send the ISA to cope with the problem via force. The Helghans are forced to surrender and are banished from Vekta, leaving their other acquisition – the planet Helghan – the only other habitat for them to live on.

Learning of this had a real unexpected effect on me. Throughout the entirety of the two Killzone games we are made to feel like the American stereotype action-hero douches are the good guys. When in fact they are the fucking bad guys. And it got me thinking you know – Guerilla could really make a hook by allowing us to play as the Helghast. It’s very rare that you get to play a war game from the “other point of view”.

In the case of Killzone though, the “other point of view” would not only be interesting, it would actually be better. There’s no denying that the Helghast’s brief appearances throughout Killzone 2 are the highlights. Imagine where Guerilla could take that – a video game not only technically pleasing but also narratively convincing too.

Here we have a race of people who have been extradited from there own homeland through the jealousy of a bigger corporation. The potential for amazing narrative is high, and it’s something I hope Guerilla will have in mind for the inevitable follow-up of Killzone 2.

Please let me play as the Helghast, Guerilla. They’re the people I care about, not fucking Rico.

Yes pre-quels would be great! a co-op would also be good. anyways I really like the story of how they were force out and mutated in a harsh planet and adapted in the next generation yes it will be good if in the next killzone games the helghst surrenders having a new goverment but a group of people in believing the old form revolt and control the whole helghan and grow to its former power and crush the UCN and ISA. it will also be good if the ISA were getting there asses kick after the ending and the UCN help the ISA after withdrawing trom the planet and the UCN ISA and Helghast fight over the colonies other planets and the helghast wins and owns all

    Amen!

    Now send this to GG.

I think its a clever portrait of real world events. But they couldn't make too apparent, b'cos the FPS-crazy PATRIOTS wouldn't buy it.
  • templar
yeah on a few occasions it looked to me that the UCN were the bad guys from the backstory

but you gotta look into it a bit more
for one the UCN took vekta back because the helgan corperation was overcharging ships passing through
and theres the fact that the helgast tortured people once they invaded vekta

in my view the helgast are the bad guys BUT the UCN was in part responsible for making them that way

That's exactly the point I made at Killzone 2 Sony PS3 Boards!!!

    you know what.
i think they dident put to much depth in the storyline because they did it in haze.
at the start your running arround killing and serching for this "bad evil man" but half way through you find out its the people you were working for who were evil.
and that dident work to well ALOT of people hate haze and downgraded it for this may be GG and sony dident want another haze on there hands.

but hell yea they should do a prequl and explain who the higs are.
how they came to be whats the back ground of the ISA than lead on to the battle of vetka.
or do a sequal its obvious its comming i mean sev ricco and gaza are standing on the stairs of vasari palace look up and see thousands of hig shipps comming in.
thats a teaser if i ever saw one but this time have flashbacks like what they do in assasins creed.
or may be a narative like they had in resistance FOM.
both these games need more detail i mean we know almost jack shit about the higs or the chimera that needs to change.

I agree! I hate the ISA. When I was playing throughout the game, I'd always be wishing I was defending the planet from the ISA scum. They just look, so... well... shootable!

The whole way this game is played, you wish you were playing from the other side.

A Helghan story mode would rock.

Well...The Helghast aren't technically the Good guys or fully the bad guys. The TRUTH is its up to YOU the reader, to determine who is bad or good.

I will say the Helghast aren't a righteous people. They imposed unfair taxation on passing ships and while they were orignially sent to those planets "TO HELP EARTH", they latter bought the planets outright (which is ok i guess) but, at the expense of all other civilization, this includes the deteriorating earth.

To say HGH are the Good guys is not true. Both are Bad in their own ways. Its about your perception of the story. TO say its OK that a HILTER style government was formed with the use of tremendous growth in resources and its their RIGHT to tax the rest of the galaxies, because of their "Monopoly" on certain trade routes is quite wrong.

I'd argue both are wrong, but all in all the Helghast are still the bad guys. Think about it. Helghast "led by 1 man", or the UCN "led by many political figures". Neither one is perfect, but I think i rather have many people then one. Remember the UCN was formed to help everyone. Helghan Industries bought the planets to help Themselves. Who is wrong?

    :)

I totally agree! I hate the ISA! Although, the Helghast weren't completely good, they also did some bad things, but the ISA did worse! This game has the potential to be an amazing narrative game!

It always made me want to hold the Helghast I'd shot in my arms and tell my dying brother I was sorry.
  • James
Wow! or maybe you should be more patriotic and just hate who the fuck they tell you to hate. It's the American way.
  • Nicholas
Helghan is the corporation and the planet, Helghast is the name Visari coined to separate them from other humans. Vekta was settled by Helghan and named after the founder before it was taken by the UCA.

It is a HUGE shame that guerrilla didn't put more backstory elements in, because it really is a good one, and it gives you a bit of a personal conflict while playing as the ISA, knowing that you're basically the oppressors. I think it adds incredible depth and a unique point of view to the game, unfortunately, the conflict is presented pretty straightforwardly if you don't know the history. That's my one and only gripe with this game.

    FUK YES!!!

was thinking the same thing when I had completed it.. it could have been so much more.. such a shame.. it fellt really tame in fact..

Fuck... killzone 1 had an much better story, and narrative then what killzone 2 has... a little odd, it like someone else tok over... pleas.. mr Twiggy.. send an fucking angry email to guerrila for all of us!!

so they can fix this shit in the sequal.. (btw.. what the fuck was up withkilling scolar visari?? he was the only interesting person in the fucking game... o_0 )

I also read a similar story for the storyline of Killzone. It was very rich. I hope the next get will focus on the tension building up between the Helghan and the UCN. Make it a prequel to Killzone 1 so we can get some backstory. THe story is so rich that they can have 1-2prequels before Killzone 1 takes place.
  • Gregero
While I'll agree that the Helghast are tight, I'm happy we didn't play as them for this reason: I'd much rather be seeing and fighting bad ass enemies over seeing those gumpy ISA all over the screen.
  • yes
finally somebody who knows this. of course the story is much deeper then that, but i guess you had to simplify it to save time. but anyways, yeah the helgast really arnt all that bad considering what the ISA did to them. they just wanted independance, and the ISA put their boot down and sent em off to a hostile world that turned them into what they are now. sure the political party that came into power closely resembles the racist nazi party. but can you really blame them for all the shit they've been through? can you really blame the germans for giving the nazi's power in a time of such economic and moral desperation? no not really. but alas, i dont really care much about the story anyways. i play shooters for the thrill. when i want compelling narrative i play an RPG.
