Sony’s E3 2009 Press Conference Could Be The Biggest In History & A Turning Point In Software Perception – “Twiggy” The PushSquare Opinionator

"They Said I Had No Games... Until E3 2009!"

"They Said I Had No Games... Until E3 2009!"

I’ve been sat here pondering on a topic for today’s Opinionator for a couple of days now. While I was going to talk about Killzone’s irritating emphasis on terrible characters, I’ve decided a discussion on E3 would be ever more prevalent, particularly with Sony’s superman John Koller claiming it to be the most important conference in 11 years for Sony. I’m still yet to be convinced that blockbuster games equal mainstream hardware sales, but I am convinced that blockbuster games will equate to niche hardware sales — the niche being us, the gamers, who cannot stand to go without. And that’s exactly why I think E3 2009 could be a turning point in perception for the Playstation 3.

I actually am probably one of the few who believes the Playstation 3 has been a success. I look at my pile of games, leaning slightly to the left under their own weight and a smug sense of satisfaction creeps across my lips – “they tell me there arere no games,” are the words that spin around my head. The thing is – no matter what sales figures or forum posters tell you – the Playstation 3 has software in abundance. So let’s write that point out immediately.

It’s perception that’s killing the Playstation 3 (among price). Although there have been masses upon masses of great games, I’m sure Sony would agree that the Playstation 3 never quite hit the ground running and since then there’s always been a taint on the black box. The very fact that there are still people out there who think the Playstation 3 is low on software confirms that Sony have never reaffirmed their position. E3 is going to/will have to change that.

It’s sounding like Sony are planning the biggest E3 in their history. If you pardon our name dropping for a second we’re just going to count out the Playstation 3 exclusives we assume are going to figure at E3: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, God Of War III, MAG, Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rain, Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time. There are six games in that list — something which no gamer can ignore. When you consider the likelihood of a Team Ico announcement aswell (which is pretty darned likely), you’re looking down the barrel of a massively convincing Playstation 3 software lineup.

And that’s not all.

If we just move aside from the Playstation 3 for a moment and focus on the PSP, we’ll find another Sony console that has been damned as a system with “little to offer content-wise”. In the case of the PSP, I think the cap fits a little better, but that’s not to say it’s been without its classics. However, the perception is still there – “PSP has no games”. Which is where E3 comes along. We already know about LittleBigPlanet (PSP), Assassin’s Creed II (PSP), Rock Band Unplugged, Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier, Motorstorm: Arctic Edge and SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3. That’s a whopping six games that we expect to be at E3 in some form or another with Sony promising the announcements of a further 50%. That’s the potential for around 10-12 PSP games to debut at this years E3, alongside the speculation of a rumoured, improved PSP hardware unit.

I don’t think I can remember an E3 where so many game names could be dropped with relative security that they’ll figure in some form at the actual conference. I’m not dealing with rumour and speculation here, this is the actual genuine likelihood of what will figure in Sony’s conference at E3 2009, and there’s also the possibility of a surprise or two.

So where am I going with this? I’m saying that Sony needs a showpiece. A moment where the gaming community is watching and Sony say, “hey, we’ve got this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this and this”. Because at that point it doesn’t matter what Microsoft or Nintendo say — perception has to change. No one can deny that the Sony platforms are without content if it’s being consistently shoved in their faces. And while I’m not convinced the likes of Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain can shift consoles on a mainstream basis, a perception change is what Sony need. Instead of those in the loop questioning what Sony don’t have, they’ll be questioning what they don’t have – a Playstation 3, PSP and access to all the quality content that Sony have in the pipeline.

And I tell you what, don’t underestimate the effects of a perception change. This could be a turning point for Sony and the Playstation 3.

Sony's E3 this year is going to blow minds. It's a reasonable prediction, given what I've heard about their super secret Seattle conference. There's something big out there we haven't really even heard about yet, something brewing under murky depths of nondisclosure...something with big nasty teeth and rolling eyeballs of doom. Soon, it will feast.

well it will be big for sony this year. GOD3, GT5, final fantasy verus, uncharted2, and dont forget theres gonna be a psp 2 coming out, maybe an exlusive peak? lets not forget hideo kojimas next game, if its an MGS5 thats gonna steel the show just like MGS4 did in the past E3 shows. and maybe some time this year a trailer for killzone 3. its in the works. so ya pretty much ps3 is kicking ass!

    ok thats out there.
but what is MS bringing to the table?

on another note R&C a crack in time is my mostly hotly anticipated title for the year.
    over GOW3,Uncharted 2,heavy rain.
EVERYTHING thats how much i love the ratchet and clank series.
im dying to find out what happend to clank and why the zoni took him away and who are the zoni.

Makidian what people need to do is think outside of the box so to speak. It's easy to get caught up in the hype and optimism for whichever your console preference. E3 could be huge for Nintendo and Microsoft too so there is no sense only having optimism for Sony.

What we do know is Sony is trying to push the envelop forward which is great and they also possess the most in house studios. However I feel they will be the only ones doing this because of costs and low install base. That's not to say 3rd party developers won't be pushing forward too with games like I am Alive, Modern Warfare 2 and Dante's Inferno (and many others) coming out but they are not just for one platform. Sony needs to exploit the hardware since the PS3 is the most costly and they are trying desperately to make it seem their system is more powerful and offers greater value. That's a lot of pressure to put on those studios and games like Killzone 2 aren't going to cover the losses that could be absorbed by releasing on more than one platform like the PC. However by releasing Killzone 2 on the PC takes away from PS3 hardware sales so it's a double edged sword.

Which begs the question, are exclusives a good business tactic? On one hand you are trying to promote the hardware and on the other hand you are trying to sell your games as best as possible. If a game like Killzone 2 costs more to make than Modern Warfare 2 but fails to sell as well then is the investment worth it? It's much harder to sell only on one platform (you could count the PSP as well) and be as profitable as open companies like Infinity Ward.

Sony had the developers on their side last generation and the one before that. Now not only do they face a more difficult learning curve to create games on those games have become much more costly and developers are now facing more options than just the Playstation brand to sell their games on. So we will see fewer of them take chances by creating exclusives for the PS3 and few taking full advantage of the PS3's hardware. This is essence takes away some of that value and makes people think twice about spending more for a PS3.

relax people, the article states waht has already been announced, not by the media, but by Sony representatives.

This arent rumors, its what Mr Koller stated in an interview. Its not that this is going to be the E3 with the most games, its going to be the E3 with the most AAA quality games. Just look at the list:

    Assassins creed 2
    Uncharted 2
    Heavy Rain
    Modern Warfare 2
    BioShock 2
    Team Ico Game
    God Of War 3
    Ratchet And Clank ACIT
    MAG
    Bad Company 2
    Rage
    Fuel
    Final Fantasy X!!!V
    Final Fantasy versus
    Alpha Protocol
    EatSleepPlay's game(possibly)

All this games have been announced for PS3, we arent even counting the ones that have yet to be revealed. Like Kingdom hearts 3 or twisted metal for PS3, or hell even a certain ultra requested REMAKE.

People dont bash the article, everything stated was based on real information, not even rumors, facts stated by Sony reps. Whats wrong with hyping about E3 and the PS3? I personally cant wait for E3.

I'm very satisfied with my ps3.infact I believe that ps3 has games in abundance.only xbots says "there are no games" maybe they can't buy it for the price or simply they hate sony/playstation, one thing is sure xbots are the worst exsample of fanboysm in the entire gaming age.
and I think that E3 2009 will be a real turning point in the entire gaming industry and the perception of truly nex-gen.
I believe that we'll see for sure next ico team's game and a new game from sony's cambridge studios and studio liverpool.
with these we'll have 9 exlusive AAA games for ps3.
Microsoft will show alan wake, halo odst and maybe gears of war 3.

    @Levelhead

You make some very valid points and I think Microsoft will try and imitate Ninty more than Sony and that will probably end up backfiring. Sony got in the game to push the envelope of games further not take steps backward(though some would argue that is what they have done this gen) and create a great advanced machine containg double or triple offerings of the same general hardware configurations, that should keep costs' exponentially lower for the PS4(or whatever they call it). I tihnk each system has clearly defined itself this gen and that trend will continue with each one adopting some feature sets from the other next-gen but none totally going in one direction or the other.

I think a lot of the mainstream public bought into the idea of the Wii not knowing what was really happening with their purchase. I bought my Wii or my family but I wanted one specifically to play core Ninty games and old-school fare. My wife wanted it for the Wii centric titles like Sports and Fit. My kids are in between that. I have my PS3 for my core games and franchises that I love, I didn't buy into it for a Halo killer but for existing franchises and new ones from familiar studios that are mostly first party with a smattering of third and second party games. If I were to buy a 360 it would be for console exclusives only, RPG's of the J variety would be the most common factor for that, however I am unconvinced that these games(ie SO4) won't make it to the PS3 so I am not willing to make a jump just to play Halo or Gears because I am not a social gamer at heart. I grew up playing one and two player games, not frag fests and deathmatches, it's just how I am and I especially don't like gaming online with racist, homophobic tweens with crummy language and parent issues.

I can see the draw to each system and I think a lot of current Wii owners won't jump to the Wii2 because they will instead be looking at what the current systems(PS360) and make their decision next-gen based on what they should have been playing more of last, and I highly doubt that crown will go the Wii2. I think the DSi or a similar device will be what keeps Nintnedo in the game far in the future not the Wii.

Next-gen will be extraordinarily interesting in terms of who does what and when and how, but that's still a few years off at least if not longer. I stand by 2012 being the next wave of consoles except Microsoft they may launch a year earlier again because they have to, however I don't think it will retain the same effect it did last time that it did this time around.

On the topic if the article though I will only say this: Sony is gonna blow it out of the freakin' water and own E3. This is good and bad because they have no choice if they want to stay relevant longer and et those PS2 owners over to the PS3 next year. It won't happen this year because they just dropped the price but I think once they cut the price of the PS3 the tide is definitely going to turn back into their favor as that is the only true barrier they face in growth. They may be trying to get their costs down to the point that they can make a significant drop and still profit and for that I applaud them because it's one of the things that will keep them in the proverbial "game".

I also think Square may have something big hapening at E3 due to ACC releasing the same day as the start of E3 and its more gamer focused. At the very least I expect a FFVII copy to hit the PSN, at the most a remake announcent or KH3 announcment would be mind-blowing.

i too have a big pile of amazing ps3 games. and sony's 2009 lineup is going to make that stack a lot bigger and my wallet a lot thinner. woo hoo!

Sony needs a good E3 showing more than any of the others (Nintendo and Microsoft) because they are the ones who are falling behind in NA (where E3 takes place). The problem Sony faces and one they faced from the beginning is trying to get people back onboard to the Playstation brand and why they should remain there. They no longer possess all the momentum and all of the attention from 3rd party developers. They have also marketed their machine as being more powerful and thus why it's more expensive. However the games don't really show this on a whole. The Xbox 360 is quite comparable as far as the games go and the Wii is a better alternative to a different way of playing which negates the SixAxis and need for Blu ray. So unless you desire watching Blu ray movies there really is no need to pay more, especially when key franchises like Final Fantasy are no longer only on the Playstation console. Sony simply cannot remove the Blu ray drive to cut costs so it will always be the most expensive console.

As for the PSP I have one as well (also own a PS3) but the games remind me of the PS2 which is why the DS is so dominant because ery few games feel like they belong on a handheld device. The DS offers a different way of playing much like the Wii. What's so different playing on the PSP than a PS2 other than a smaller screen and portability?

One problem both Microsoft and Sony face with their new consoles is a sense of identity. They are too alike. The Xbox 360 may have Live and the PS3 may have a Blu ray drive but other than that they are too closely marketed which has opened up a doorway for Nintendo. If all 3 consoles had Wii-Mote controls then it would come down to hardware and price. This is why Nintendo is not in a very good position other than their own franchise IP's for the future because I expect Sony and Microsoft to seriously look at costs and less focus on advanced hardware in their next systems and adapting a more casual philosophy much like Nintendo. With Sony's in house development teams and Microsofts' online service and marketing I just don't see Nintendo doing well next round.

    1. Title(big in history, how and what will be the cause, anything official?)
2."Pile of games", "software in abundance"- connotation for hyping a slow growing game library(a fact, not a perception), its almost like a marketing statement
3.Gonna CHange at E3- How? With What?
4.So many games dropped at e3- Have u follow past e3 expos?, in fact there are less titles announced than 2005 and 2006, when X360 and PS3 where launching and needed real hype
    5. Quality content- Which one, its the same across consoles(and dont even mention Home)
6.Perception has to change- How the fucx, if you didnt said anything and didnt bring anything to the table, not even a official statment or fucxing rumor
  • Alex
Building hype for sony!!! hmmm, reporters doesnt learn and doesn't tire of the same thing. The didnt learn about killzone overhype failure, a perfect example. As i said once, building too much hype can cause the opposite effect on the buyer, from a possible inversion into be scare from investing on console or game. Let the time account the announcements, news or success, and not mediocre articles with out solid proof of anything. Remember E3 last year, nobody saw what MS did, did MS build overhype? NO. Lack of information isnt equal to lack of titles, marketing or capacity. Most game reporters dont even know what they're talking about, the just comment in base of popular thinking. If they really knew whats incoming, the story would be a hell different.

Being desperate for publishing things without valid sources and solid proof of the statements of a report, only cause misconception in potential buyers, and puts them far away of the possibility of investment. i said the killzone 2 was an example, sony reliaed in onlline marketing and hype, but didnt work to create a true scenario of a great incoming game, the decition to let reporters and game websites to manage marketing and hype for the game failed to capture investment. Buyers need evidence and proof, not hanging words on articles and reports. Killzone is a great game but is Sony's own fault for the failure in sales. A game like it, could have sold over 4M and not 1.1M(officially confirmed up to now).

Let the gamers decide, what will be great or not, not reports or articles, building hype from air, so then when deception comes, they go fast an tell Sony lied, and they are sad cuz didnt see this didn see that, it wasnt announced, for Christ sake, if game media creates such conception then they should accept they role on failure and not acuse companies.

Game media, every day talk about PS3 price drop, then when that comes, it will be ablow to MS, they tell it will come next mon th, gamers react waiting for this, then sony said that don't plan a ps3 price cut, then gamers are in deception, whos fault is? Game media. They have been fucxing with the price drop the entire year 2008 and up to now mid 2009. They dont realize they are hurting Sony, when they build hype only to get deceptions on a never ending cycle up to now, and it will continue cuz my opinion doesnt matter a sh!t.

My advise, wait for official announcements, not buggy articles
  • Thedonandmikeshow
Nice article and well written except for that one double negative sentence stating "no one can deny Sony are without content.". I disagree with your point though. Sony was declared the winner of last years big gaming shows and 2008 was said to be the year Sony's PS3 would be looked at as the one to own but even now in a month where the biggest exclusive KZ2 comes out the Sony team is beaten by an Xbox RTS and the PS3 stills trails the 360's console sales by 110,000 units.
  • @ Thedonandmikeshow: Thanks for a non-idiotic response.

I think Sony did pull off the best of the E3 shows last year; but in my personal opinion Resistance 2, LBP and teasers for MAG and God Of War III don't even come close to what they have in the pipeline this year.

Last years E3 did nothing to really change perception on a wide scale like Twiggy is predicting here.
