A Playstation 3 Pricecut Could Cripple Sony So Stop Begging For It – “Twiggy” The PushSquare Opinionator

Don't Assume You Know What's Best For Multinational Corporations, Bloggers!

“Hello, I’m the editor of a small multiplatform video game blog and I’m still in high-school.” — these are not the words of this particular mystery columnist known as Twiggy, more the words of every other no-name blog I seem to stumble upon. Such words are usually penned in invisible ink prior to the radically uninformed, but nonetheless factually presented, “Sony need to cut the price of the Playstation 3 because Sony need to make more people buy one because Sony need more developers because Sony need…” — you get the idea, valued reader.

I beg the question – do any of these self-titled digital rag tappers have any understanding of the inner-workings of Sony as a company?

I don’t. And I’d bet my anonymity on the belief that they don’t either. Why should any of us know anything about what goes on in Sony’s boardroom — we’re here to play games and talk about our experiences, not assume business practices.

Y’see, such hit-seeking blog entries are crafted by a minority of nobodies without the first clue of business. They see the Playstation 3 last on a pile of hardware sales and think they’re losing adopted ground in a fictional video game war that has absolutely nothing to do with video games whatsoever.

Reader, if you don’t mind me straying into the simple nuances of basic maths for a paragraph or two, allow me to explain as promptly as possible why no price cut is actually a good thing. If you may picture in your minds for a second or two a Playstation 3 system; it retails at a consumer price of $399.99 and costs $440 to manufacture (correct as of December 23rd 2008). A simple mathematic solution (399.99 – 440.00) concludes that this leaves Sony with an offset of (negative) -$40.01. Wake up at the back!

With our offset calculated, we can conclude that based on current figures, every Playstation 3 loses Sony (as a corporation) $40.01. Imagine we were to drop the price of the Playstation 3 to something reasonable, let’s say $349.99. “Huzzah,” call the mass of bloggers, “The system we already own is now a little cheaper. Brilliant!” — wrong. It’s not brilliant at all. If we repeat the same arithmetic as earlier, with our “improved” figures (349.99 – 440.00) we come up with a new negative figure, (negative) -$90.01.

“But $90?” I sense you trainees claiming, hands wiggled poignantly in the air, “$90 is nothing and it’s going to increase market share tenfold.” — thus we reach the crux of the problem.

In February 2009, Sony sold 276,000 Playstation 3 units. Let’s assume that our speculated pricedrop came into effect on the first of April, backed by a substantial (and successful) marketing campaign. We’ll suggest that Sony managed to shift 600,000 units the month of our speculated pricedrop, a substantial growth of both market share and presence. But aside from blog-bragging advantage, what would this mean for Sony? One final equation will give us the solution: $90.01 (the offset between sales price and manufacturing cost) * 600,000 (number of systems sold) = a staggering (negative) -$54,006,000. Just to clarify: that’s fifty-four-million-and-six-thousand dollars lost.

Sony is a big company, but in this economical climate, no one wants to be looking down the barrel of a big fat negative sign prior to the number 54million. It’s potentially crippling. I’m not even a business analyst and I can realise that.

So here’s the thing no-name bloggers; your pleas for a pricedrop are falling on deaf ears, because even this anonymous columnist can do the sums that make a Playstation 3 pricedrop unfeasible at the moment.

That’s not to say the price won’t lower eventually — the maufacturing costs cited earlier are half of what they were in 2006 and they’re dropping all the time. As prices come down, there’s no reason to doubt that Sony won’t pass that saving onto the consumer. Of course market share is being lost, but it’s not so substantial that Sony’s closest competitor is gaining daylight between the systems — in fact you must acknowledge that Sony have done extremely well pushing systems as it is.

And reader – if you are still reading of course – let’s not pretend that the Playstation 3 doesn’t have the longest potential system life-span of the three available. Interchangeable hard-drives, Blu-Ray discs, firmware updates, the potential of the cell chip and reliable hardware mean that the Playstation 3 could easily outlive its proposed ten year lifecycle. In the year 2012, when Microsoft and Nintendo ready their new systems at an early-adopter price point, which console do you think is going to be the cheapest on the market, with the biggest games library and a gaining market share?

“This is why the Playstation 3 didn’t need a pricedrop in 2009″ – will be the headline on a collection of no-name blogs.

    @ JONAS

No multi-platform title sold better on the PS3. None. Period. Provide facts, or back away from your ignorant statements.
  • Rebel
    You are all morons.

That $440 dollars (provided by iSuppli) is simply the total cost of the components that make up the PS3.

It DOES NOT include the cost of labor to put it together, marketing, legal, HR, and all the other ancillary costs that go into making the Playstation 3. How little any of you understand about the business world. Amazing.

    @jonas

i didnt call you a moron - it was aimed at fartelli

i take your points on board but software developers are beginning to get disgruntled with the price of the PS3. Sony may seem to think that they can rebound by making tongue in cheek comments but the fact is games make a console. i didnt say that EA will or have stopped making games for the PS3 but what im trying to say is that Sony are running the risk of upsetting games developers by not reducing the price.
  • Jonas
@ Peter - I did not call you a moron. I respect your thoughts and opinions even if you don't mine.

In an ideal world, of course EA would want Sony to sell more systems. In an ideal world, EA would want Microsoft and Nintendo to sell more system too. That's because they're EA and they NEED to sell games. If all three systems (and the handhelds) are all selling equally high, EA are a happy company.

That's why Sony rebounded saying "third parties want us to give the PS3 away for free" -- it's tongue in cheek because EA would literally be over the moon if all the system's this generation were given away with McDonald's Happy Meals.

The point I'm trying to make is -- with a price cut currently not on the cards, the PS3 sales CONTINUE to be at a high enough level to ensure that publisher's are on board. Let's not forget that sales parity between PS3 and 360 is not TOO far apart -- Rockstar earned more money from PS3 GTA4 than they did the 360 one; likewise SF4 PS3 initially outsold the 360 one, as did RE5 in Europe.

The point I'm trying to make is, we should have this discussion when EA or Ubisoft or whoever actually come out and say "We're not going to put games out on the Ps3 anymore" -- which isn't going to happen.

The PS3 has sold 21 million systems since it launched. The 360 is somewhere around 30 million with a year-headstart on the market and an incomparable price. Sony are doing absolutely fine.

If you're worried about EA stopping developing on the PS3, perhaps you should consider they stop developing on the 360 also and just solely work on the Wii. After all, fitness games are where the money is.

Who cares? Me and my fellow cheap bastards still won't buy it til we find it worth buying. If your happy with your purchase, that's great. You should go buy another one or take your nose out of sonys ass. Sony doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks. Majority rules! There are more cheap bastards then brown nosers according to sales. The ps3 can walk and talk and do a jig for all I care. It's worth buying when I say so, duh.
  • peter jones
@ jonas - EA have asked indirectly for a price cut. think about it - example: (might not be a good one) if you sell 50 million copies of an EA game on the wii and 45 million on the 360 and only 10 million on the PS3 - are you going to invest more money in making games for the PS3 or the wii and 360
  • peter jones
sony are investing for their customers in the long run -lol- what customers? they are constantly being outsold by the wii and 360 every month, and we're not in japan you moron when was the last time you had a yen in your pocket. with times being hard which console would you buy your kids? the low price wii and 360 or the expensive bluray player. the only one thinking in a limited way is you get with the times, theres a recession, no ones gonna fork out a shit load of money on a ps3 when they can buy a 360 which is in the same league and youre calling me a moron.
  • Jonas
@ Peter - is there any evidence at all that EA are going stop releasing games on the Playstation where they previously would have? None.
  • lady
    Well said Martelli.

This price crap did not start up until the economy hit rock bottom.
  • Igniz
Great. Still the "No Games" theory. I only play racing games on my ps3, but still, people who say that need to come out of the year 2000. Granted the 360 has more but saying the PS3 has none, makes not much sense.
  • martelli
What do you mean there aren't any good games to play on it. Take a look at the line up! Take a look at whats there already. PS2 is still for sale and there still making games for it. That will happen in 8 years time with the ps3 even when the ps4 is released, do you see that happening with the xbox or wii.

Guys it's a investment, get with it now or later be you will be on board at some point, that is if you really care about gaming.

And i wouldn't really call it a minority, not in Japan anyway. And read the god dame article here you moron, sony are not being greedy at all, they are investing in there customers for the long run. Your just tight and you must think in a very limited way. I can't understand why people like you think so basically.

    ##Sorry will not post again!##
  • peter jones
what good is it if there arent going to be any games to play on it, why should companies like EA take a hit on behalf of Sony and continue to make games for a console that belongs to a minority. They will allocate the money for the PS3 to the Wii and the 360 which are owned by the majority. so for all PS3 fanboys who believe Sony should stick to their guns and not drop the price you can all give yourselves a big yay when all you have left is the worlds most expensive bluray player. As for the loss of $40 per PS3 console thats a load of bull, its a whole lot cheaper to make the PS3 now than it ever was. SONY are just being greedy and they will find themselves sitting redfaced next to SEGA on the SHELF!!!!
  • Igniz
    @Martelli....Well said

That pretty much sums it up. The PS3 is plain and simply value for money. A music system, Movie Theatre (depending on the tv), Internet bowser, and ofcourse Flower (just bought it...kudos to the developers).
  • martelli
I'm sick of hearing about this price drop stuff. The ps3 is real value for money with no hidden costs unlike xbox. I wonder if you compare the PS3 with the xbox with what you have to pay on top there won't be that much difference, only that the xbox would have no blue-ray playback. Just buy one you cheap mothers, it does a whole lot more than play games. It's my media center; plugged into my big 40" full hd screen, i would pay over $500 for it, that's how much i love it!

Anyway who cares about the masses, let them miss out on whats going to be a fantastic year of exciting new innovative gaming. I'm quite happy really that the people who buy a ps3 has a understanding of quality, taste and are people who don't care about an extra bit of cash and therefore not petty.

While this is certainly an informed and informative review about the Playstation 3, the simple fact is that without sells of games, they are doomed financially anyway. So the fewer people that own their system, the fewer games they sell. A price drop WOULD help them move more systems out to more people, and while they may lose 40 dollars per system, they stand to gain more if they provide more games to more individuals once the system is bought.

Again, biased one-sided journalism at it's best.
